Artist description
Combining the rough pop sounds of early era
Blondie and the edgy melodies of proto-emo giants,
Sunny Day Real Estate, Portland four piece Leaving
the Scene captures the emotional ups and downs of
a tumultuous youth and crafts them into daring
pop-rock compositions that transport the listener
across a full spectrum of emotion.
With a voice that fluctuates between introspective
whisper, soulful cry, and hard edged battle call,
lead singer McMahon preaches tales of love, loss
and life with a narrative sensibility far beyond
her 18 years. Comprising another piece of LTS's
songwriting team, guitarist Dunphy’s thrashingly
dirty pop hooks form the thesis of Leaving the
Scene's unique, incendiary sound, forging the
melodies of each song and often giving way to
simple and subtle solos. Through the pulse of
Dunphy's distorted guitar, the intricate
baselines of Wilson rise, molding the melodies
that tighten the dynamic interplay between musical
chaos and form, before crashing down again into a
sea of hard edged sound. Uniting the unique
textures of each instrument, drummer Goldman holds
each eclectic sound together with grace and ease,
crafting rhythms which not only keep beat to the
songs but confer upon each of them a new element
of style.
Since the release of the EP, Leaving the Scene
has been writing almost non-stop, the music
relentlessly evolving as the musician’s
contradictory influences and styles make way to
pop genre marriages that resonate for listeners
across the pop culture map. Their aspirations
reach beyond the limited Portland music scene
and on to national exposure-but all in due time.
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
