Artist History
Hello's founders and primary composers, Mark Dudzik and Paul Cullen meet in high school in 1998, having a class together about geography. After realizing that they both had a passion in music they decided to try to form a band that summer. With a set list of cover songs, the two found drummer Mike Hodges and bassist nick Kruse. They lined up a few gigs at the local coffee shops under the name Hydro, which stood for a psychelidic substance that was not water. The band played covers mostly by Sublime and Deftones. Soon the drummer grew tired of the lack of style from this music and moved on to pursue a career in percussive drumming on a concert level. Later Nick Kruse also left the band due to scholastic stress and athletic duties brought on by high school.
After a year of hiatus and experimentation with random musicians, Mark and Paul decided it was time to pull their shit together due to the rise of a local rival band that was gaining undeserved attention. The band (to be left unmentioned) often wowed the crowd with cheesy dances and bad pop lyrics. Madly under pressure Mark and Paul found Ryan Taylor and his associate Nick Kuc to play drums and bass. When the band started they had the stamina of Ron Jeremy. Nick's funky bass lines were the foundation of such songs like bass solo and sex, while the psychedelic strumming of marks guitar playing were enhanced by the rock style of Ryan's unique drumming. In the winter of 2001, Hello went into a local studio to lay down some tracks after a home recording system proved to be useless when encountering difficulty trying to blend separate lyric tracks. Such power songs like Inland Sea and Spirals were cut, as well as the jazzy tune The Advantage of Unfairness, and a mind blowing tune entitled The Maddening.
Soon after they began handing out this demo, Nick Kuc left the band due to a conflicting schedule due to his enrollment in ROTC down in Lafayette where he attended college also. After the loss of Nick, the motivation had seemed to disperse and Ryan soon became displeased with the band and left also. Pissed off as hell, Mark and Paul were left again, but they still jammed hard and wrote continuously.
During Paul's enrollment at Purdue Calumet, he met a drummer by the name of Curt Schreiber. The two became good friends having many things in common such as music styles and college majors. Paul constantly tried to persuade Curt to play drums for Hello but Curt was very occupied with his band Sad Hanna. Sad Hanna was doing quite well, by lining up a gig at Six Flags Great America in the summer of 2002. After jamming with Curt a handful of times, Paul realized the skill Curt possessed. In the fall of 2002 after the Great America gig Curt decided to take a short break from Sad Hanna, for their lead singer would be attending school in Japan this semester. Curt agreed to sit in with Hello for a while and things were working out great. The composure between the three of them was fantastic. Even with the lack of a bassist the band was able to play a few shows, with Paul and Mark both alternating between bass and lead guitar. Later in the fall of 2002 they found bassist Rich Foreman, who helped to fill the gap that would complete the band.
