23 years ago, Marciano, Felipe and Daniel, never imagined that their story together would take them to transcend borders with their music, be nominated for a Grammy on two consecutive occasions, receive multiple international acknowledgements, platinum albums, awards and in one of the classic Latin Rock groups that have influenced more than one generation of new bands.
Enanitos Verdes have achieved an irreplaceable spot in the history of Latin American Rock, and their new production “Amores Lejanos” (faraway loves), once again confirms that the trio, originally from Mendoza, Argentina, still have much to offer. Produced in their Country of origin and masterized in Los Angeles, the thirteenth album of the band’s career goes on sale October 29, 2002 simultaneously with various other Countries. Following this release, Enanitos Verdes, prepare for the commencement of their tour in which they will present their public with their new production. A tour which they will initiate immediately after returning from various presentations in England, Spain and France.
The story of Enanitos Verdes starts in Mendoza, Argentina in 1979, where Marciano Cantero (main vocals and bass), Felipe Staiti (vocals and guitar) and Daniel Piccolo (drums) are originally from and where they met at a very young age. Five years later they recorded their first self- entitled album, under an independent label. The first single “Aun sigo cantando”(I am still singing), caused so much euforia on the radio, that in a few months, the now extinct transnational label CBS (currently known as Sony Argentina), signed them and shortly after, Enanitos Verdes released their second album entitled “Contrareloj” (against time). An album which elevated them very high in their native Country and from which immortal themes such as “Tus viejas cartas”(your old letters) and “la muralla verde”(the green wall) surged and exposing them to new markets. Hence, with these first two singles the doors of several South American Countries opened, giving way to the first stage of Internationalization for the group.
The third album of the group’s career came to light in 1987, under the title “Habitaciones Extraas” (strange rooms). From this album, also surged themes that turned classic in Hispanic Rock: “Por el resto de tus Dias”(for the rest of your days), “Te vi en un tren”(I saw you on a train) and “El extrao del pelo largo”(the stranger with the long hair). Songs that when presented, provoked tremendous public ovation in the International festival, Via del mar in Chile, which presented Enanitos Verdes the maximum award of the silver torch. This acknowledgement by the public caused their albums to be released in all of Latin America, Internationalizing them even more, arriving this way for the first time in Mexico and Central America.
1988 was a busy year for Enanitos Verdes, because not only were they on tour for months in various Countries, but also because they were recording and releasing their fourth production entitled “Carrousel” (Carousel). From this period surfaced other classic themes: “Guitarras Blancas”(White Guitars), “ Sos un perdedor”(You are a loser) and “No me veras”(You will not see me), three themes that were heard on the radio in various Countries, placing them on the top of the charts. In 1989, “Habia una vez”(there was once a time) turned into their fifth and last album with CBS. This album marked the group in many different ways, and despite that their career was at the top, at a pinnacle moment, Marciano, Felipe and Daniel decided to take a long and well deserved break and they embark on one last tour before they separate and decide to say good-bye to their public with two memorable concerts in Central America.
After three years Enanitos Verdes decided to start playing live again. This time EMI signed them and released “Igual que ayer” (Same as Yesterday), title of their sixth album and first single. The public turned this song into an instant hit, followed by what would become an anthem in schools for a very long time: “Amigos”. The band then decided to embark on a long tour going once again to Latin America to fill the space they had left vacant. In just a couple of months the band received various gold records in different Countries and enjoyed their success as they became one of the most important selling acts in Spanish Rock. The band decided that it was time once again to work on new material and the result was one of the most relevant records in the career of the band: “Big Bang”.
“Lamento Boliviano”(Bolivian lament) was the first single of “Big Bang” and a contemporary classic that took them to platinum record status in almost all of Latin America, making their crowd grow from venues to arenas and playing 129 concerts in 10 countries in less than a year. “Mejor no hablemos de amor” (We better not talk about love) and “Celdas”(Cells) were among other hits from this production that to date is one of the best and complete albums of Enanitos Verdes.
The history continues with “Guerra Gaucha”(Gaucha war), another great album that confirmed the maturity and success of the band. From this 1996 release “Dale Pascual” and “Eterna Soledad”(Eternal lonliness) were released as singles and became instant hits. The End of this phase was marked with an extensive tour all across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Two years later the band releases “Planetario”(Planetarium), an album produced by Nigel Walker (Paul Mc Cartney, Rolling Stones , Sting, etc.). That same year, Enanitos Verdes were signed by Polygram, which two years later would be bought by Universal Music.
The 10th album of the band, and the first with their new label, was recorded live and broadcasted by music channel Telehit Mexico. “Traccion Acustica”(Acoustic Traction) is a greatest hits collection of the band which includes a cover of “Metro Balderas” from late Mexican artist Rockdrigo Gonzalez and two unreleased tracks. The album had excellent reviews and was nominated for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Performance at the 1998 Grammys.
One year later, the band releases “Nectar”, an album that consisted of 10 new tracks and the first record on Universal Music Latino. The album got nominated for a Grammy for the same category as “Traccion Acustica”, making this the second Grammy nomination for the band. Three singles were released from “Nectar”: “Cordillera”, “Luz de Dia” y “Tequila”. These songs became instant hits and paved the way for the band to make an extensive tour that concentrated on the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico and ended up with a slot on the Watcha Tour.
In 2002 the band had been touring nonstop for almost three years, and decided to take some time off to concentrate on writing new material for their much-anticipated new album. The band decided to head off to the mountains located in the South of Argentina for the summer- which in reality is winter in Argentina to compose and plan their new album. And that is how we go back to the present, to “Amores Lejanos”, in which Enanitos Verdes is reflected, taking us back to review their career, music and accomplishments. “Amores Lejanos” is an album that confirms the place the band occupies since the beginning of their career up until this day. Great themes such as “Frances Limon”, “Cuanto Poder” and “Cairo a Paris” promise to be part of the long list of radio hits the band has had, which will later turn into classics.
