Artist History
Catalyst is a band that has very diverse roots. Guitarist Dave Darjany grew up playing classical violin; bassist Kevin Welsh has played just about every musical instrument over the course of his life; Phil Roach had a drum set in his cradle as a baby; and lead singer/songwriter Chris Darjany has been a professional jazz pianist and arranger for more than 5 years.
The band as we know them today was formed in the summer of 1999 when God gave Chris a fresh batch of deep worship songs and a vision for reaching people through worship music. When the band originated, Chris had already been playing in different spheres with all the members of the band. He had played in the worship band at his home church, Bethany in Long Beach, with Phil since 1994. Kevin had been playing bass in a jazz band with Chris, since 1996. Also, Dave had been playing violin/piano duets with Chris from a very early age. This gives the band a very tight chemistry.
Catalyst’s musical style can be compared to bands such as Delirious?, U2, Sting, The Kry, and The Gin Blossoms. Chris’ songwriting has been influenced by Martin Smith, Bono, Sting, Don Henley, Keith Green, Rogers/Hart, and a healthy dose of old Hymns.
The band sings about living for Christ and blends their music with lyrics that are up front and honest. The experience that the listener has brings them closer and deeper with the Lord. Catalyst feels called, both in their local assembly and beyond, to lead people in worship.
This is the band’s mission statement: “Catalyst exists to provide music that sparks a reaction of worship between people and our Lord, Jesus Christ in a relevant, sincere way, uniting believers and showing Jesus to those who do not know His everlasting peace.”
Catalyst hopes you can be a part of what the Lord is doing through them! |
