Press Reviews
Beneath The Blue made their debut on the Savoy stage, and from the very first note, it was apparent that we will surely be hearing a lot more from this innovative group of young performers. Principle players, Steve Perry (lead vocals / bass), and Ian MacDonald (vocals / guitar), were joined by Theo MacIntosh (keyboards) and Bruce Aitken (drums).
Perry and MacDonald have been collaborating musically for many years and locals will remember their days as Beatle Juice, a Beatles cover band. That was then, this is now. Friday night, fans heard a fine example of their original material, from the opening number, 'Cinderella', to 'All Alone in the Middle of the Night'. Each and every song left the listener eager for the next, made evident by the encouragement of a crowd fit to party. Whether you like the sound tinged with ‘60s induced rock or brand new funk, this is one group destined to impress any discriminating listener!
Steve Perry delivers the lyrics with confidence, minus the attitude of someone who knows they are putting on a great show. The audience could sense the efforts put in to both writing and performing the songs on the composers’ own terms. Much too quickly the set abruptly came to an end, but these guys should have a very fine feeling in recalling their debut.
Not a bad result from a group formed less than three weeks earlier. MacIntosh tells me all four players were honored to be opening for the Commitments. “Knowing the story behind the movie and group, it seemed a fitting place to introduce Beneath The Blue,” he says adding that with only a couple of rehearsals under their belts, they were quite overwhelmed with the reaction from the crowd. “It was that positive feedback that swept onto the stage and made the whole experience feel great.” The plan is to get out there and spread the word and the sound and get to recording their first CD. Just another example of the calibre of homegrown talent, that deserves the support of the community. Beneath The Blue - without question, capable of taking on anything offered on current top 30 charts of the day.
