Artist description
Willbe is known to the real world as William Lamy, resident of Strasbourg, france, a Tim Burton & Prince fan and a graphician + webdesigner at times. You could label his music as hiphop or triphop but don't pack him in a drawer already! He has proved that he can equally produce slammin' hiphop, funky jazzy vibes or mellow harmonic ballads. His influences can explain that versatility 'cause Willbe has a really big list which goes from Prince, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel thru The Roots, Wu-Tang, Nas and way back to classical composers like Prokofiev or Beethoven. and each track of his is a mixture of all those styles, it's only a question what style prevails! |

Artist History
Being a rock drummer in his early days he felt limited by his drum set and was unable to express himself in a proper manner only with percussive instruments. that's why he turned to making music on computers and started tracking on a 486 pc in 8bit mono quality. in time he moved on to better configurations gaining high sound quality and excellent audio software which gave him the ability to mix his tracks to perfection. altho this seems too synthetic, he has never left out that acoustic vibe and he keeps using sampling his own drumset thus adding that special willbe vibe. as willbe himself says: "rhythm is power & harmony is soul. although i work essentially with electronic machines, acoustic is the vibration we need in music. jazz for your head, classical for your heart, hip hop for your feet. favorite motto is like "artist's job is definately not to bring to everyone what they expect or use to want". the deal is to teach & entertain the masses at the same time. sounds cool, eh? simply respect brain, instinct, & love."
By joining the internet scene, making his first official release was in 1997, he has progressed to the top, being 'artist of the month' on traxinspace and compilation damm cd 's (available on mp3.com. and not to forget all those wonderful releases on the old theralite release list. |

Press Reviews
"WillBe is a funky bastard. He's a stupendously great composer and has done a few real masterpieces. Some of his stuff is experimental while other is just plain laid back and jazzy. His music is generally very rhythmic in a hip hop type of way."
(Anders Akerheden, http://hem.passagen.se/andersak)
"The hip-hop culture isn’t that widely represented in the Mod scene. However, there is one artist who brings forth this culture with the strength of many hundreds; William Lamy, aka Willbe. This French musician, 24 years of age, is August’s Artist of the Month; not only for the original style in his music, but for his brilliance in taking Mod music to new grounds. The authenticity, the experimentation and the distinct will to make a difference in the Scene all constitute the excellence to which is so long aspired."
(Lisa Lindstrom, www.traxinspace.com)
"Here is someone I am happy to be sharing a number of genres with, thanks to the new Genre system. What can I say about Willbe except this guy can invent like nobody’s business. Drop the needle on the turntable, and you’re inevitably on something of his that makes you go…Hmmm. From trip hop to funk to acid jazz, he has the touch—quirky, atmospheric, self-assured tunes that reflect a level of craftsmanship and ingenuity."
