Artist History
The music was conceived and born in the orchestra.
For many years as a percussionist in an orchestra, Morrison was exposed to the powerful works of the symphony. Mahler, Berlioz, Holst, and Vaughan Williams were composers who significantly influenced his musical style and compositional direction. He was also a student of Sleeper and Langston.
Following school, he took a “non-musical” job in order to make enough money to live. Music took a backseat in his life for a period of time. The only music activity he was involved with was playing in bands. This generally led to much frustration for Morrison. He grew weary of just playing drums, always wanting more control of the musicality of the ensemble.
After awhile, Morrison began to long for the dynamics and timbre of the orchestra. He missed the sonority of the strings and the intelligence of orchestral sound. He began to truly ponder his last memories of classical music. He remembered feeling as others did, that symphonic music was resting on its past laurels. Orchestras played music mostly from the past, holding on to some forgotten reason.
It was the Spring of 2002 that Morrison began composing and recording groups of musical changes or passages. It was then that he made a conscious decision to return to the music of the orchestra. Although without an ensemble, he proceeded to complete this first work in November 2002, entitling it ‘Symphony’.
He enlisted an old friend he played in college bands with, to play bass, Steve Gosney, and the rest is History. |
