Press Reviews
DAILY VIDETTE ISU Written in the Sand is part of the latest generation of upbeat Midwestern pop
bands. Thankfully, they are a bit more interesting than most of the glut of
indie-pop bands out there. They don't sound like they're growing up, but more
like they're getting better at writing songs about not growing up.
It seems like the money from all those hot-selling Sig Transit Gloria albums
went straight into a variety of Korg, Casio and Roland keyboards, which give
the whole album a spacey feel.
A few of the tracks hearken back to the halcyon days of "Mega Man" themes, or
possibly the casino level in one of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" games. The members
obviously have a fondness for video games.
The lyrics are unabashedly innocent and happy, and when the fun is a bit over
the top, the band seems to be laughing at themselves. Citing a Robert Frost
poem might seem like a rather obvious way to describe beauty, but when the
singer drawls "Robert Frost" at the end of the song, the reference becomes a
bit more clever and self-effacing.
Written in the Sand's "47 Ursae Majoris" is a reasonably enjoyable pop album,
and even if I never remember how I got it, I will probably remember these
catchy melodies for a while."

It's time to take a journey, led by fast moving keyboards,
catchy melodies and aptly-delivered vocals. It's a
sometimes uptempo trip, sometimes more meandering
and midtempo. Regardless, it's infectious and
I'm hooked. This Chicago six-piece uses the standard
guitar/drum/bass set up but adds numerous keyboard
options to create a space-pop sound that, at times,
reminds me of Mates of State and instrumental band
Inlantic. The keyboards they utilize include the
Casio CZ-101, Roland MC-202, JX-10, and a few others.
It all comes together damn effectively on this
10-track debut album that is bound to get you
bobbing your head along to the beat and swaying
to the keyboard movement.
