    Artist History
The Shattered was a glam-rock band from the Bay Area in the late 1980's. My name is Todd Rhynes. I played drums for The Shattered. As I look back on my time as the drummer for The Shattered, I realize what a great time we all had. It was short lived, but it was great! Now that we have the internet, it seems you can find anything and anyone, unless of course if you look for The Shattered. The time has come for the story and music of The Shattered to be available on the internet. Perhaps this web page will help it's long lost members and management to reconnect. In late 1988, I was working at Rainbow Records in Saratoga California, when a guy came in with straight black hair down to his waist. He told me that he heard I was a drummer and offered to have me come try out for his band. They were previously known as Something Wild (taken from the Marilyn Monroe movie) but planned on a name change once they found a drummer. Something Wild had started off on the right track. For their first show, they opened for LA Guns in Mountain View California. I was interested. That night they came to my parent's house where my drums were. We collaborated for an hour or so, and they voted me in. The next week, we moved into our studio, which sat in the lovely Los Gatos hills. By the way, this is still to date the best studio I have ever rehearsed in. Thanks Chrissy! Some of the songs we worked on were hand-me-downs from Something Wild, but we wasted no time coming up with new material. We also came up with the name The Shattered in the first few weeks we were together. Also new to The Shattered was singer Stevi Towns. He knew Lisa Lorraine who was to be our manager. Lisa was strictly business. We did our first show at The Cactus Club in San Jose in 1989. From there, Lisa began to book bigger and better shows. By July of 1989 we recorded our second demo tape which was self titled. This was the first tape that we put out to the public. The tapes were sold at record stores all over the Bay Area and even got reported to Billboard Magazine for selling in the top 40 of some stores. The sales of the tape brought more and more people to our shows. We were now starting to see lines of people in front of the clubs, waiting to see The Shattered. We began to open shows for big names of the day like Vain, The Pandoras, Michael Monroe of Hanoi Rocks, Bang Tango and Enuf-Znuf. After one year of live shows, we went back into the studio to record our third demo titled Truth. It was recorded at Astral Sounds studio in San Jose and mixed at Hyde Street Studio in San Francisco. As soon as we finished recording Truth, we went on a small tour with LA glam band The Guttercats, who had just appeared on an episode of the TV show Married with Children. Those shows were quite successful. Truth had not yet been released, but we just knew that it would mean our big break. Not so... While we were in LA with The Guttercats, our manager Lisa was putting down her roots to form a band management team with The Guttercats manager. Just before Truth went for duplication, Stevi Towns was voted out of the band. This was hard to do since we were all so close. The decision was based on differences in musical style and direction. Towns went on to other projects. The Shattered went out looking for singers. After much searching and convincing, Jeff Hicks took the front man position, and Michael McShane was added to fill the rhythm guitar slot. Now that there was a line-up change, the band wasn't interested in releasing Truth. Still in need of a new demo, and having spent all of our money on Truth, we went into a much cheaper studio to record with the new line-up. It was a midnight session. That's how broke we were. We recorded three songs: When I'm Gone – it was a brand new one written by Jeff Hicks, Tell Me – was also new, written by Kevin Croall, and You Lose – which was recorded on the first demo tape. The music on this demo, simply called The Shattered, reflected the change of musical direction for the band. The tape was put out to the local record stores, but it didn't sell anywhere near what our first release did. Show attendance was down too, despite the fact that Lisa Lorraine was still managing us from LA. The Shattered had lost it's flair. Relationships within the band weren't as close, and soon we called it quits. It was fun while it lasted, but in hindsight, I think we gambled the band like a craps shot and lost.
