Artist description
If you're looking for instrumental, danceable grooves akin to Vinyl or Galactic, Stonefed's got 'em. If you prefer freestyle jam rock with incredible changes, swells and psychedelic sounds a la Phish, Stonefed has it down. The band also covers multiple genres (sometimes undefinable), from swing to rockabilly to country-fried rock. Born and raised in Utah, but unlike any other local band, Stonefed is a fresh, talented six-piece without a weak link. Each member displays his own ability to solo, harmonize and play a righteous melody. Charged, versatile and talented--that's Stonefed.

Redrock boys make good
Stonefed feeds bodies, minds and souls on regional club circuit
by Franklin Seal

Moab has had its share of local rock bands, but few of them, if any, have ever made the jump to the regional club circuit. The dynamic six-man, swing-funk fusion band, Stonefed, happily is the exception to that rule.
The month of May saw the six-piece Moab band heading north for three SLC gigs: The Dead Goat Saloon, The Zephyr Club and Liquid Joe’s. Later in June and July, the band is scheduled to play Telluride, Colo. and Durango, Colo. They’ve been playing Salt Lake periodically for the past six months, after they got their first out-of-town gig a year ago. Though you can’t pop in to Music of Moab or jack into CD.com to buy their music, the band does have a disc they sell at concerts—a live recording from one of their Zephyr Club appearances—and two songs are available to download off their website, www.stonefed.com.
Despite those obvious marks of success, you don’t have to leave town to see your favorite Moab band. This weekend, Stonefed plays the Moab Arts Festival at the MARC; on June 8, they’re scheduled to perform with Gooveberry Jam at Old City Park.
The three-year-old band features a father and son team, Steve Olschewski on harmonica, and his son John, the Stonefed frontman on guitar and vocals. Anchored by a rock solid rhythm section comprised of Ed Stone on drums and Dave Mealey on bass, Stonefed gained a distinctive style two years ago when Marshall Paul, who originally hails from Appalachia, joined the group. His distinctive style of guitar playing is well complimented by Joe Lasater’s trumpet and vocals.
A true ensemble in which all share the spotlight, Stonefed moves through sets of mostly original pieces—inspired, danceable grooves akin to Vinyl or Galactic, and free-style, psychedelic jams ala Phish. But they’re just as hot when they occasionally jump into covers from a diverse range of genres, from Swing to Rock-a-billy to country rock.
The band’s name derives from drummer Ed Stone’s last name, and from the red rocks surrounding their hometown, Moab, John says. "Being desert rats, we’re all kind of stonefed."
But he doesn’t identify any specific aspects of their sound that might derive from their Moab roots. Moab, however, does make its way into the lyrics of at least two songs, he adds, "Hey," which mentions the landscape around Moab, and "Discopornography," which includes riffs on Moab’s political scene.
