Artist History
september satellite started with a simple, plain, straighforward idea: one acoustic guitar supporting one voice. however, it quickly grew into much more. with catchy vocal melodies, inventive grooves, and exposingly personal lyrics, september satellite has begun to attract fans and listeners at a rapid clip.
each member contributes qualities to the overall sound. jonathan steingard and foz bring experience and leadership to the band, derived from their prior band experiences, while tim mcnelly and michael steingard bring the freshness and creativity that is so essential to keep the more weathered members on their toes.
the concept of september satellite started in december, 2001, when jonathan steingard parted ways with noisegate, the band he had been involved in for almost two years. jonathan had played guitar as part of noisegate, and had played numerous shows with the likes of thousand foot krutch, zacc's tree, lucerin blue (then natural saint), and vertigo. jonathan had a hand in noisegate's writing and arrangements since he joined in 2000. when jonathan left the band in december 2001, he began writing more of his own material, with no intention of ever actually doing anything with it. much of his music stemmed from personal journals and writings, making them intensely personal.
jonathan began recording these songs at the blue box studio in august of 2002, again, with no intention of ever releasing them. his concept was to record several songs with only an acoustic guitar and vocals. however, as it is so easy to do in the studio, especially working with jeff wardell, the studio's engineer, jonathan allowed the recording to "get completely out of hand", and it turned into so much more than the acoustic rantings of a lone singer/songwriter. during recording, he made several live appearances in the area, playing his music in a scaled down acoustic style. the name september satellite was chosen, as jonathan wasn't interested in being identified as a solo artist with his name in bold print on the front cover of a CD.
upon completion of the project, jonathan began the task of finding a band to perform live. after several months of a somewhat revolving-door band member policy, several talented local musicians commited to join him in the band's endeavours.
the first to join was foz, who had several years experience under his belt as the drummer from radar cookie jar, an emo band from barrie. jonathan and foz had played together several times on worship teams, and had even once shared a stage when each of them were in their former bands.
michael steingard jumped on board next. he was something of an unusual addition. with no prior band experience, but an undeniable talent for picking up any instrument and mastering it in hours (so it seems), michael added a very youthful and energetic flavour to the mix. and yes, michael is jonathan's younger brother.
the final addition to the band was tim mcnelly. his skill and knowledge of music as an artform has yet to be completely tapped by the band. he has the ability to find perfect instrumental and vocal compliments to virtually any music, and can adapt instantaneously to almost any musical style. he can also breathe fire. seriously.
with the band complete, and the CD released, september satellite is ready to bring their new flavour of acoustic emofolk to any fans and listeners who are hungry for a fresh and heartfelt sonic experience. |

Press Reviews
a review of september satellite's "the summer journals"
by myke harrison, former guitarist, thousand foot krutch
We see the image of a young man listlessly jotting down notes, capturing words on a page before the late hours extinguish his bedside candles. We look closer and see the tiny shadows of letters dance around the page as our subject tries to collect his essence, in the form of words, on a page marked "The Summer Journals."
What we don't see is the music that accompanies this melodic and musical zeitgeist. For this we have to put on the album, because these pages are only the lyrics accompanying a sprawling musical journey. A churning and chaotic emotional tempest that rides on music more tranquil than waves of California sand. "Journals" is a triumph; a lyrical mastery. Such honesty and integrity is usually found in the lyrics of the aged; the experienced—the traveling troubadour, weathered and despondent, playing before his king. Yet here we find these very virtues dancing atop the music of a young man barely in his twenties. "The Summer Journals" is a graduation, of sorts, from disenchanted youth drowning in a cascade of confusing thoughts and heavily distorted rock music, to a young adult, casually and gracefully, posing questions and taking notes.
The songs are, at once, stirring and inquisitive, representing a charred and tangled past, which untangles before our eyes.
What better way to recognize the exodus from youth, than this collection of songs so peaceful it defies comparison?
The muted acoustic ballads will, however, draw comparison. You may think “Jars”, you may think "Dashboard," or "Further Seems Forever," but this isn't close enough. Let’s see, how can I explain? Acoustic, yes, but forget fireside camp songs or new-age settings of warmth, muted lighting and roses laying hastily about (somewhere John Tesh is smiling). Think, rather, of a small bedroom, poorly lit, a lamp, a chair, a bed. Think of a stack of journals filled with thoughts. Think of dirty laundry lying about and a solitary figure wiping aside stray socks, sitting on the bed and pouring out his heart on an acoustic guitar. Yes, that’s a little better.
Of course, our friend Jonathan also knows how to rock. That comes from years of playing in rock bands, using his formidable guitar skills to thicken the sounds of bands like Noisegate, or helping Radar Cookie Jar stay afloat amidst a sea of faces at Acquire the fire. All the while he was holding a secret: looking at Jonathan playing for these rock bands, we were seeing more than a guitarist (though he plays that role well, indeed.) Rather there was a songwriter hiding behind those six strings. A songwriter hoping to be heard. A songwriter with more thoughts and ideas than six simple strings could possibly express.
The thoughts and ideas were expressed, however, in the Summer Journals. Sshh, you can hear it in the cello. Sshh, you can hear it in the piano. Sshh, you can hear it in the arrangements. Sshh- if you listen, you can hear it in the lyrics.
We retreat from the room, the candlelight failing even as we break away. The Journals put aside, our subject pics up his guitar and strums a listless tune.
