Artist History
Dave-Michael Valentine (DMV) grew up in a
community outside the city limits of Astoria,
Oregon. This community, populated with "hippies,"
introduced DMV to the acoustic guitar as a
means of personal expression, and experimental
drugs and herbs at an early age. After his parents divorced in 1972 he
toggled between his mother's assorted residences
around Astoria and his grandparents' homes in
Aberdeen and Hoquiam, Washington. DMV was raised in
a spiritual environment and discovered many
avenues leading to God. Of all the religious
influence, his personal preference was
more traditional Christianity. He
settled down in Aberdeen and married. That
relationship yielded 3 children before its end.
After that, DMV took his carreer "on the road"
appearing in a variety of "cover bands" as he
relocated to Bellingham, Washington,
then again moved to Salem, Oregon, where he resided
until 1994 when he returned to Aberdeen, Washington.
God appears in many of DMV's tunes because,
"being a songwriter is a blessing and a curse. It
is a means of therapy, whereby I can deal with my
own personal problems and perceptions, as I work-through
the human experience." Dave-Michael goes on to say,
"The difference is that you run around with your heart
on your sleeve for all to see... and there's no taking
it back, later, after you've already put it out there."
The result is a variety of musical discourse that
is less marketable than one would expect. "The problem
is that the religious folks have little respect
for my personal 'spin' on their gig, and the
general public that can appreciate my music for
what it is - they're surprised to find that I have
strong religious beliefs - and are pretty much
offended by that." Not fitting into any commercial
mold may have had a negative effect of his potential
music career, "but," as Dave-Michael says, "I can't
do anything about it, because it is what and who I am.
You cannot separate Dave-Michael the musician from
the person. They are one and the same." |
