PREVIEW: CLUMSY
"FALLING OVER THEMSELVES"
Gritty trio CLUMSY bumped into each other as students at UWE and soon made the decision that it might be safer to stick together. The music is delicate (albeit bruised), intimate acoustic pop and they boast an atmospheric demo that’s caused much sighing from listeners. They might not watch where they’re going but they seem to be on the right path.
Although they feel allied to the fresh wave of artists some are dubbing Bristol’s Nu-Acoustic movement, the threesome feel equally at home among the brasher guitar gangs. "We don’t want to be pigeonholed as an acoustic band because we’ve got three vocals going on and percussion, so there’s volume," says bassist/singer Jon Patch.
"There does seem to be a lot of different acoustic stuff going on at the moment," adds percussionist/singer Simon Patch, "but it’s difficult to pin it down and give it a label, that’s why it’s interesting."
Exciting as the music is, the acoustic scene still attracts less interest than those bands of an amplified persuasion. "We’re interested in doing gigs where you’ve got a contrast in sounds" says vocalist/guitarist Joel, "that’s a way forward to getting different audiences, to give them a package that’s mixed up. We’re looking at doing a gig with Trhe Bufseeds and The Windmarbles, so there’s a start. There are real benefits from networking with other bands."
You can trip over CLUMSY at The Louisiana, Bristol on Thur 28th Nov and at The Croft on Tue 3rd Dec. Their website is at www.clumsy.info. CRIS WARREN
