Press Reviews
The 5th Element's first full length release, Warm December, has been long awaited and long talked about. For quite some time, the group toiled with recording demos/records. With label talks from Epic and Warner Bros., lots of rumors circulated about the band, but lots of talks lead nowhere as well. Finally, figuring doing it their own way was the best way to do it, the St. Louis-based rock group hit the studio starting this past March to start tracking their record.
Originally set to be an EP, the album was expanded to an 8-track full length record later that summer. Consisting of some semi-older songs as well as brand new tracks, the album comes with a feel of their older, more hip-hop oriented style on tracks like New Day, and also delivers their fresh, more metal sound with tracks like their instrumental Blumpkin, as well as their “single” of sorts, Recreational Wargames (which is fairing well on local radio). Another new track is a collaboration with John Taylor (former lead singer of Big Blue Monkey), titled Forced On.
All in all, the CD has an excellent mix of mellow, heavy and experimental tracks. Nothing is extremely new, but nothing is blatantly ripped off in the least. Elements of metal, hip-hop, and other more recent sub-genres of rock can be found here. Vocally, Jack Wiese is extremely talented with very clean melodies, a deep, menacing scream, and has very honest and straightforward lyrics. His scream might use a bit of work, or maybe better production of it (not saying to Pro Tools the hell out of it), because at time it just sounds monotonous and even for a scream is hard to decipher what is being said.
Guitar-wise, Kyle Brooks plays enough intriguing riffs (especially in the instrumental track) to keep one happy. Most of the guitar work is very well defined, and after being mastered, doesn't sound as muddy or quiet as previous recordings. SGM Studios really aided their sound by producing one great sounding album.
Drums and bass are present, but never make their presence as well known as I wished. For the most part, Jack's vocals, Kyle's guitars and Kenny Snarzyk's turntables and programming are most striking about the album, with the drums making noticeable contributions. The bass does it jobs, however, and provides a rigid backbone—just not taking much of a leading role.
Speaking of Kenny's contribution, it's one of the more noticeable aspects of the band. In the past, the band was more of your typical rapcore band, with heavy spinning, very hip-hop oriented music and vocals to compliment, but now, they have more of a straight up metal approach. Most would have probably thought about losing the programming and spinning, but instead, they incorporate it in very well. At times some complain of the “rap metal spinning,” but for the most part, the music doesn't center around it, and it adds to it. In a few tracks, keyboards are present, and some samples cut over bridges as well.
All in all, the album is extremely well written, put together, and produced. For a low budget release, this is by far one of the most impressive statements in a while. Nothing exceedingly bold can be said about the album, but at the same time, no one can make many remarks on the negative side about their work here. If you're looking for a straight up modern metal album with a slight hip-hop influence to it, with clean vocals, this is your album to pick up. Hopefully, the next outing will make an even bigger splash and send them flying into the music industry.
