Artist History
Slight Return is a band evolving and constantly expanding its range of touchstones. This energetic group from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia has offered audiences dynamic, emotional indie rock characterized by euphonious guitars, melodic vocals and a creative sense of structure since 1999. Motivated by a diverse set of inspirations their songs are punctuated by oddtime signatures and occasional screams. This emphatic stridency reveals the influence of the Halifax underground, which has nurtured the band since its beginning.
In January 2001 Slight Return entered the studio to record its first full-length album, You Are Not Our Demographic. The ten songs on this debut skillfully articulate the band's often divergent influences. The result was a heartfelt, multifarious album which maintained cohesion through a prevailing melodic sensibility. In support of You Are Not Our Demographic Slight Return toured Eastern Canada three times, received air play and press reviews across Canada, as well as in Europe and the United States. They shared stages with bands such as North of America, The Plan, Rocket's Red Glare, Snailhouse, Two Minute Miracles and The Weakerthans. Slight Return made their national television debut on CBC's Street Cents in February of 2002.
In June 2002, Slight Return recorded four new songs at The House of Miracles in London, Ontario. These four songs constitute Slight Return's best recording, performance and song-writing to date. The band is currently planning extensive touring to promote this pending release, including a short Eastern Canadian tour this December, a Canadian tour this spring, as well as dates in the United States and a European tour in the near future.

What is it about Canada these days? All of a sudden, it seems Canadian bands are jumping onto the scene with a vengeance, and living up to the slogan, Canada Kicks Ass. Yes really. Who said nothing cool ever came from Canada? Obviously they were unfamiliar with Matlock Records, a label that is sending some great rock across their southern border, with groups such as the Wooden Stars, the Plan, and newest faces Slight Return.
Characterized by wacky time signatures, layers of guitar sound, intelligent lyrics, and endless energy, Slight Return’s second album, You Are Not Our Demographic, is a refreshing sigh of relief from a cookie-cutter Indie Punk scene. Sure, they have influences just like any other band one can hear a bit of Braid, Sunny Day Real Estate, or Fugazi in their songs. But what makes Slight Return a quality band is the fact that they add their own take on the sound, making an effort to be not merely a copy, but a strong force in their own right.
From the album’s opening track, A City Skyline, Slight Return prove themselves capable of composing a strong tune. Singer Matthew Kennedy’s (or is it Jonathan Samuel’s? They switch off.) vocals drive a pretty, jangly number that rocks out at the end. And the album only gets better. A Provincial Lion has all the elements needed for a hit, including an especially catchy chorus. Math Without Tears is a lo-fi, gang-vocal rock-out with just the right mix of singing and screaming. The album’s closer, Stockholm is also a beautiful song, with a great mix of dynamics and emotional vocals reminiscent of Jeff Buckley.
It could be said that Slight Return overdo it a little at times, for example the song Clarity includes the line, this canon is candor this capsule is carefree the canvas the canting on the caricature of capital Bob Nanna (Braid, Hey Mercedes) is about the only lyricist in Punk that I can think of who could pull of a line like that, and even he probably couldn’t. But these moments of silliness are few and far between. Overall, You Are Not Our Demographic is a fun listen, definitely worth checking out. 3 1/2 stars - Lacey Tauber
