The Story Behind The Name
Many people ask, "So what's the deal behind the name Dorothy Jane?" Well here it is, the story of how Dorothy Jane came to be and how we chose the name. It's a great story and sort of a tribute to a dynamic person that had a great influence on Dorothy Jane the band.
Robert, Billy, and Jon have known and perfeormed together for many years starting with their first group named The Untitled. The Untitled was a progressive rock band with roots in the Rush and The Cult born era of progressive rock. The band eventually moved on to pursue more daring individual pursuits such as careers and family.
In 1998 Robert and James came together in what seemed to be an unlikely place to meet a fellow bandmate, a business meeting. Noticing common ground in the area of music preference and choice of musical weapon (the guitar), Robert and James decided to get together and start piecing together ideas for starting a new band.
Immediately Robert brought in his lifelong friend and co-conspiritor Billy Wilson. Billy brought vocal and melodic talent to the table that was needed to execute the dynamic offering envisioned by the now 3 friends.
Shortly after the 3 began meeting, the band Stagger was born when drummer and recording engineer Kelly Davis joined the group to complete the project.
Stagger played the local Baton Rouge circuit for about 3 years. But, after writing and performing together it was time to part ways and enter into new individual adventures once again.
Little over a year later, Billy, Robert and James got together once again to play some music. This time, Billy brought along Jon Wilson, his brother and former drummer with the Untitled. The jam session sparked a rekindled interest in forming yet another group this time with a lighter and more accesible, yet musician friendly feel. It was decided to start meeting from time to time to see what might just happen.
About six months later, the gang decided to make it official and begin piecing together an identity as a band. Beginning the search for a name had started and the group scheduled their first real practice as a band.
The day of the first practice came, and Billy arrived at their small studio located in James' home. Not 5 minutes after arriving, Billy unexpectedly received a call from a family member. The worst possible news had arrived, a family member had passed away, Dorothy Jane Wilson, Jon and Billy's mother.
Dorothy Jane Wilson had no doubt had a great influence on the Wilson half of the group but she had also been there for many years through Robert's friendship with the family also. The news hit hard and as soon as Jon arrived the brothers Wilson made their way to meet family and mourn the loss of a mother.
A few months later the group got back together to continue their efforts as a band. It was decided unaminously that the band be named Dorothy Jane. A name with meaning and legacy.
With every end is a new beginning! This new beginning has started off with great collaboration and the solidity of lasting friendships. With great pride, we present to you the story of DOROTHY JANE.
