Artist History
Venus in Furs was formed by vocalist Adam Bursack, guitarist Joe Schneider, drummer (and later bassist)
Mike Thorsgaard, and multi-instrumentalist Tom Haugen, who had all played together in various
high school garage bands. Guitarist Danny Gillispie
joined soon after, and the band played its first show in May of 1999. The band's first
single, "Wyrms" (recorded live at the May 1999 show) reached #24
on Rolling Stone magazine's Alternative Rock online singles chart, alongside such artists as Folk Implosion, Beck, and Hole.
A second single, "Gate 42," reached #8 on the corresponding "Experimental"
chart, directly ahead of a track by Brian Wilson. Venus in Furs released their first CD,
the "42K" EP, in April of 2000. It included both the original version of "Wyrms" and a studio version, along with five other
studio tracks. The MP3.com version of "42K" was later reissued with seven bonus tracks (including a version of "Gate 42") as a response to
the site raising its minimum CD price beyond the appropriate price
for a 7-song CD. The band has gone through several lineup changes and now
consists of Adam Bursack (vocals), Joe Schneider (guitar, bass) Tessa Breitbach (drums),
and Corey Cook (guitar, bass). Venus in Furs is a fixture on
Fargo's only independent rock radio station, New Rock 94.5, often playing live in the studio. An EP of an in-studio performance for the station,
"Radio Sessions - 8/24/2002" was released on October 31, 2002. The band plays regular live
gigs and is beginning work on its first proper full-length album. |

Press Reviews
"Venus in Furs is Fargo-Moorhead's answer to the Cure, The Birthday Party, Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel, and Bauhaus. . . Intricate and ornate guitar stylings are layered upon visceral bass grooves, primal drumming, and insanely melodic keyboards... They create an explosion somewhere in between musical genres that makes the band's creation hard to define in simple terms. It would take a one hundred page thesis to describe the sound present in Venus in Furs' music..." -Bryan Grob, "The High Plains Reader," July 20, 2000
"Rock and Roll Heaven. . ." -a New Rock 94.5 DJ, November 17th, 2002
"Besides Pearl Jam, you guys are the best live band I've ever seen. . ." -some guy who vomited twice in a mosh pit (while sober), January 19th, 2003 |
