LoKRA Loads Up At Metal Night
By Matt Stefaniak
"Recently I had the pleasure to witness the ever-talented lineup at Liquid Magazine's Metal Night at Cheers. On January 18th I was especially excited because there were four bands I had never seen before, Aurum, LoKRA, Psychomancer, and Chronic Disorder and they did not disappoint. Two of the bands caught my eye as major talents in the area.
Chronic Disorder closed the show out with a blaze of furious noise. The kind of noise that makes you happy your ears are ringing two days after the show. Chronic caught my eye before they had reached the stage. These guys looked like my dad, but when Chris and Mark started delivery on their Jackson and Ibanez guitars you knew that they were for real, and their experience showed.
Three songs stole the show, Never Again, Deep Within, and Only I Guide My Inner Self tore the stage apart. Much like Metallica in their hay day they played raunchy leads on both guitars. They also used three tiered vocals that made a sound that most local bands only could wish for. For these guys, bring the earplugs and put your first impressions to the side because they are more than worth the cover price. But it doesn't end there.
When I walked into Cheers that night (late as usual) I was immediately impressed by the band on stage. All I could see was hair banging, and four guys who were feeling the music they were playing. The stage was barely holding together as Brendan, Ryan, Jet, and Aaron of LoKRA were smashing through their set.
I went to look for Bill Finn and he was standing by the Amps banging his head, and I knew these guys were something special. Brendan and Aaron were switching leads back and forth and Brendan's low delivery reminded me of some kind of Megadeth-Pantera metamorphosis. The drum set wasn't brand new or special, but Jet was cranking out the rhythm on a single bass drum that had two pedals. Every song was driving, reminiscent of the machine gun sound Lars Ulrich creates in Metallica's "One". When it came to the guitar playing, I had to push my bottom jaw up more than once. Leave typical power chord metal at the door, Brendan and Aaron were pulling out the stops, four fret stretches, and bar filled licks supplied the band with the tone and power that some other bands that night lacked. Then the shocker of the night happened as I sat down with Brendan after the show was over.
We sat down to a pitcher of beer and I was asking him his influences. He mentioned Deicide, Megadeth, Atheist, Tool, and Testament. Then I mentioned that their sound was fantastic and he told me that this was their first show in nearly two years. They reformed the band adding bass player Ryan to the lineup and had already written and performed four new songs in a four-week period. Damn.
The show that night was a great experience for me. Not only was it my first work for Liquid Magazine, but it was the first chance in a while that I could go to a bar and see a group of bands that didn't play covers, and loved the music they played. Say what you want about thrash metal, maybe its dead, maybe its in a re-birth, maybe they all sold out years ago, but if you get a chance to watch a thrash band or any band pour their hearts out all over the stage like, the aforementioned bands, do it. Lets leave this age of synthetic music and go back to the way it used to be, guitars screaming, heads banging, and ears ringing."
