    Artist History
In 1996, after having played some shows with Sublime, the Skunk Records/Cornerstone R.A.S. crew took notice of the unique sound and energy, and soon after inked an agreement with the band. 1991's New Ruler & The King and 1997's The Means...EP, along with the release of Deadly Hi-Fi round out a discography capping nearly a decade's worth of making music. Both locally and throughout the country, Filibuster has shared stages with a wide array of bands including Hepcaat, Pennywise, Madness, Toots & the Maytals, The Roots, The Ziggens, Long Beach Dub Allstars, Ozomatli and plenty of others. In fact, after completing a US tour supporting the Skatalites in 1998, Filibuster was asked to support them in Europe.

FILIBUSTER ALBUM REVIEWED: DEADLY HI-FI Released 1999. Reviewer’s assessment of album and artist: HIGHEST RATING. This, the third release from this California band is quite a good one. In fact, I recommend you pick one up as soon as possible. This CD has a massive blend of ska, reggae, hip-hop and jazz. A lot of similarities to Sublime, unfortunately the singing isn’t quite as strong. However, this band is wonderful! The first few songs just keep bouncing and jumping along. On the sixth track, AARGH ST. hits with a saxophone solo, which is as long and as good as anything that The Bird did. With a great riddim behind it, it is one of the best dub songs ever! (And it happens to be nine and a half minutes of pure pleasure!) Buying the CD for this song is reason enough, but then you can experience the other seven songs too. I want more! Reviewed by Natty B. Reggae Express http://www.reggaeexpress.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- September 17, 1999 POP LIFE: Filibuster goes for innovative music on its "Deadly Hi-Fi" Sacramento's Filibuster is on the brink of the big time, even if the "third wave" of ska remains a footnote iin 1990's pop music. The group's latest CD, "Deadly Hi-Fi", will be released Tuesday by Skunk Records, home of 1990's ska favorites Sublime and the Long Beach Dub Allstars. On Saturday, Filibuster will celebrate the release of their recording with a show at the Press Club. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Reggae Nucleus Jan. ’98 Filibuster. The Means (Skunk/Cornerstone R.A.S.), New Ruler and the King (C.O.D) Filibuster, the ‘urban street rocksteady’ band from Sacramento has teamed up with Skunk Records and Cornerstone R.A.S. on the The Mean. This is Filibuster’s second release, but their first in nearly two and half years. The Means is a tasteful release of hip, punk, reggae, ska with rollicking basslines. This release offers some truly activating energy. Especially on cuts such as "Showdown Dub" and "6 Wheels" they provide reggae riddims with licks on vinyl with extreme horns that adds to the tasteful style that Filibuster is known for. Filibuster’s first release, New Ruler and The King is a piece of great energy, and of course each release is different form the other. But the similarities are quite familiar. Heck yeah! These musicians have the flava quenched. My favorites on this CD are: My Times High Times" which is percussion-driven with an explosion of horns: "No Good Rudie" which they kick it right on target for Justin Hinds & The Dominoes "Rude Boy Situation" and "Fat Cat" Filibuster is definitely the talented band they demonstrate on CD, so catch them live this year. These two CDs are great. Ireno Rodgriguez --------------------------------------------------------------------
