Artist History
Over the past three years the CafFiends have left their mark on Southern California with their unique style of Post Punk, Indy Hardcore. The group came to be in 1997 as a side project called the CafFiends. “We just messed around and wrote these punk songs about caffeine and my cat.” Ed remarks. As time went by the side project started getting serious. “My lyrics are a lot more passionate then they used to be. Now I write about the people I interact with during my day, about my friends, my faith, society, and about myself.
In early 1999 we went through lots of changes, both in the line up and musically.” says Nacho. “We try not to call ourselves punk, or Hardcore, or whatever, because we find that it limits our style, and people tend to look at us with a certain notion of what we should sound like,” comments Nacho, the lead singer. “We just try to challenge ourselves and do the undone. “I like the aggression of punk, and hardcore break-downs, but we are sick of bands who can’t move past the same recycled punk beats and three chords”.
In August of 1999 the CafFiends spent about two weeks at Ed, the drummers, house recording their first full length CD Dissonance is Beauty. Soon after the CafFiends released a full assault upon Southern California, playing virtually every all ages Venue in the area. “We never play in Hollywood, it’s all Pay to Play.” says Nacho, “They thrive on young bands who think they have to play in Hollywood to make it big. We would rather play venues that actually care about the bands.” in 2000 the CafFiends opened for bands like: MDFMK, Slick Shoes, One King Down, Dogwood, No Innocent Victim. and went on tour with friends .rod laver.
In 2001, after signing with Screaming Giant Records, the CafFiends released their 2nd full length record called “Closer to Defeat”. This record digs much deeper, and goes to a new musical level for the band. “We feel like we have defined a more unique style all our own, when we recorded our last record two of our members had joined the band only months earlier, so with this record there is more input from the whole band”. All the songs on “Closer to Defeat” are longer, and more dynamic than most “Hardcore” records, mixing traditional hardcore with metal, rock, and emo, with pop sensibilities. |

Press Reviews
John: The song 'Cost of the Cause' is by far my favorite track on this release. I came across these guys at 3:00am over the internet. I listened to an mp3 and was hooked. I emailed them on the spot wanting to know more about them and how ihateyour.com could help.
For starters the music here is killer, a great mix of punk, hardcore and emo, tightly wrapped in a 3-day-old hairball. These guys have a good command over their respective instruments, which is a necessity topull this style off without sounding like road kill.
William: Great, now we are going to get a butt load of hate mail because you used the 'emo' word. I thought we agreed not to use that word. These guys rock with the best of them, I would definitely catch their show and pick up the cd "Closer to Defeat"
John: You are probably right, but you know what, I am not afraid. I don't let tv or radio dictate the style of music I listen to so why should I let a few noisy kids make me hide the fact that I like emo? Piss off, that is what I say! CafFiends is a great band and you should check them out when you get a chance. If anyone tells you different you will have a choice to make. It's us or them. Choose wisely..
Conclusion: Punk, Hardcore, or emo. You be the judge, but whatever genre you try and pigeonhole this release in, you can't deny that it belongs in your collection. The album is great, and wherever they fit they blow the competition away. -ihateyour.com

Every time I listen to this CD (and I have been listening to it alot), I can only think one thing: Is this CafFeidns Escape Plan? These guys are simply the closest thing I've ever heard to the Dillenger Escape Plan, which is a feat in itself. The good thing is, it's not like a rip off of Dillenger, not by any stretch of the imagination. The aspects of it that are very much like Dillenger are the vocals (which are hard to describe, but are like Dillinger's in the respect that they aren't too fancy, just straightforward and intense), the guitar riffs, and the drumming. The guitar riffs are very heavy and creative, but they also have the lightning quick finger picking interludes throughout the disc. Now, they aren't QUITE as prevalent as in Dillenger, but that is a good thing, because if they were, they would be TOO much like Dillenger. They do it just enough to make it sound good, and just enough so its not a copy cat. The drumming is the same way. It fits into the music very well, but goes crazy sometimes too. The odd timing and odd timed breakdowns create a more insane sound. The production is VERY well done, too. Very clean, tight, and professional. I'm very impressed with the way this turned out, considering most indie projects usually lack in some aspect. Overall, I think that this is one of the best albums I've heard in a LONG while. You can get it at www.caffiends.org. - DeadZine |
