Artist History
The tranquil Swedish island of Faro, home to legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, is also the birthplace of Amen. One cold summer night about 5 years ago on one of Faro’s deserted beaches, Johan Israelson and Carl-Michael Herlofsson were contemplating the hazy glow of the midnight sun and comparing musical backgrounds. In the ‘80s, Johan immersed himself in the goth, punk, and Manchester scenes (the latter so much so that as a teenager, he led a Stone Roses–influenced band called the Love Kings). Although Carl’s main influence was old-school hip-hop, they both shared a fascination for techno and the rave scene, as well as a mutual love for T-Rex and oddly enough, Donovan. When these seemingly disparate musical elements were matched with Carl’s intense creative drive and Johan’s intense love of smoking pot, Amen was born.
Working in fits and starts – trading rough tracks on cassette, enlisting and experimenting with various programmers and singers, building a temporary studio in Stockholm and shopping their demos – Amen produced an EP ( |
