Artist History
"The Skintree" was formed in early '94, by Shawn Bateman (guitar/vox), John Cunningham (bass), Chris Myslenski (guitar), and Brian Clemens (drums). At which time, the band spent most of their time organizing festival-like shows with other local bands around the Cleveland area, writing material, and finding "their sound". This line-up lasted until late that year when Chris decided to persue a career as a techno DJ... The band then went through a series of changes in sound and personnel, including the addition of guitarist Dave Carpenter of "The Gimps" (presently of "The Healers"). This arrangement was also temporary. Shortly after his arrival, Dave left due to differences between him and the other members... In March of '95 the project was put on hold for almost a year while Shawn took care of some personal matters. He returned that winter and the band picked up right where they left off and organized a show called "Shine'96" that included, at least, 10 of the Cleveland area's most promising bands, poets, and performers... The Skintree, then, went to work on writing and recording demos of old and new material. A few of these recordings were compiled to create "...Won't Wake Up", the bands first demo/release (1997)... Now, after 3 years "on the shelf" during which time, the band became a part-time studio project for Shawn (ie: the "Drip Dry" EP), The Skintree has been re-defined and reformed, working with pianist/keyboardist Nick Ciobutaru and other such musicians. They are presently in the process of writing and recording material to be on thier sophmore release...

Press Reviews
The Skintree...Won't Wake Up Seedling Recording What’s interesting about the title of this CD is fact that it fits the music like a glove. The Skintree paint dreamy and ethereal soundscapes along with odd sounds inserted various junctures of several songs to make the entire experience interesting and very enjoyable. The more I heard.. .the more I liked about this album. Not only does the group maintain consistency throughout, they give each and every track their very own unique stamp that gives them complete and unchallenged ownership of their sound. This of course is no easy task in this day and age of dime-a-dozen rock groups. Not really sounding like anyone else out there that happens to be making solid music, they manage to provide a different take on life and music. With a varied attack of instruments and a dreamy layered output of synthesized diversions... you really won’t want to wake up. You will be hoping that this fabricated dream state will continue. Every performer has major influences, and this group is no exception to that rule. It sounds as if there are many influences working all at the same time with The Skintree. . . British based groups mainly. The Beatles, Duran Duran, and Crowded House (with a more alternative edge) come to mind after a few short minutes of listening. The lead singer Shawn Bateman (whom also plays the guitar) sounds like a mellower version of Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction). The point must be made that even though these aforementioned influences are present, they still manage to maintain tremendous originality and strength. This is a fine effort, and very much appreciated by this writer.Keith Hannaleck August 11, 2000MuzikMan's Sound Script |
