Press Reviews
Listen.com Review-- Somewhat despairing songs about loss played on synthesizers and piano from an extremely prolific woman who can really sing. Drenched in reverb and exhibiting a mixture of influences including country, Oldies and the best of '70s Lite Rock, Risja (aka Kathy Mollett) hits positively heartbreaking notes with an emotional raggedness that's on a level with John Lennon's primal screaming on Plastic Ono Band. This is absolutely original music, more the sum of its influences than an expression of a single style. Nashville pop savvy, karaoke self-reliance and pure depth of emotion come together for exceptionally crafted and movingly executed ballads. - Mike M. Following Review by Doug Cornell -I hope you were paying attention back in the 80's when Sinead O'Connor released her debut album, "The Lion and the Cobra". This CD has found itself in my CD player quite frequently, as there were few female artists from that decade or this on (including her own later works) that equaled that masterpiece.Risja (a.k.a. Kathy Mollett) sounds like she could mature into a singer with the power of SInead. Heck, Risja already has the voice, and what a voice it is! Risja finds a melody and lets her voice roll above, below, and all around. Most female vocalists tend to sound alike to me, but Risja's voice definitely stands out from the crowd. She also performed all of the music on her tracks, which for the most part is slow, simple synth and drum programming. She knows her voice is her strength and uses it to the best of her ability.I found "Last Dance", which is about holding one's head high when faced with adversity, to be a peaceful, quiet number. It is easy to imagine hearing this song while in church. It would be very interesting to hear Risja in the context of a complete production- some instrumental variation would be welcome. |
