Artist History
Kevin Selby was trained in classical piano from age 6 to 16. He then moved into Big Band jazz and jazz choir in high school and also played in contemporary rock & roll/country bands during that time. During college, he focused on original vocal music and played in jazz fusion-type combos. Once out of college (and into the REAL world!), he became a Christian and devoted his life and his music to serving God. Some folks say his style is jazz, or new age, or even slightly classical. He prefers to think of it as contemporary classical with a slightly jazzy edge (how’s THAT for creating a new genre!). May you be blessed as you listen to his music. Press Reviews
Todd Vick (popular Amazon.com reviewer) wrote: "At My Father's Cabin - track 3 is your best song. Period. This is the type of music that people who listen to instrumental pieces love to hear. I like the way you use your dissonance in certain verses, and the bridge is very powerful. The song breathes and has life. Also, the movement in the song forces the listener to be carried along with it and that makes for a nice commanding song that gently woos your listener. Your changes are very powerful and moving, this song is dying to be heard. You actually sound like several different artists on different tracks. For instance, on the CD In My Father's House track 1 sounds like Jim Brickman, track 2 sounds like Floyd Cramer, and then you have your own style which comes through. Track 14, I believe, is the best track on this CD (you actually let the music breathe, but you still move it and control it) and the tune is not too long which leaves the listener wanting more, this is what makes people like George Winston, John Tesh, and Jim Brickmann such a great pianists. "Durinsbane wrote:"This is gorgeous playing--very heartfelt and emotional. Kevin Selby is a technical master with lightning fingers, as is displayed on "The Stony Ground Hearers" but can get slow and sensual, as on "Miles Apart." Kevin's execution is nearly perfect--I don't hear any shaky time, poor dynamics, or a single wrong note. The mastery of technical execution is matched by the emotional expressive quality--a rare combination indeed. I don't subscribe to Kevin's particular religious framework (some sort of evangelical Christian, as far as I can tell), even though I was raised that way. However, this music still reaches into me and tickles the funny bone of my spirituality, moving me in a deeper way than I am moved by 'just another pretty tune'. It is very uplifting and open, and takes the listener on a explorative journey with the notes. The melodies carry these tunes very well, and are supported by wonderfully thick and deep complementary left hand lines. Kevin claims that his friends tell him that he sounds like George Winston but that he wouldn't know, as he doesn't own any. I find this hard to believe, as the paralells in the music are very distinct. I am very impressed with the musicianship here. Great classical/jazzy/new-agey compositions, excellent playing, wonderful feel, and an admirable slant, regardless of the fact that I don't share the specifics of Kevins views. Artist info claims that more orchestral arrangements are coming, but I have to say that I enjoy these tunes just as they are." |
