Artist History
Ivan Katz was born in Washington, DC on May 29th 1970. A local boy all his life, he grew up in Alexandria, Virginia where his parents gave him his first guitar at age 12. A music theory course and many cover bands throughout high school served to strengthen his musical background.
While Katz spent much of his time in school writing poems, it wasn’t until he was about 20 that he began putting those words to music. He began writing melodic chord patterns to complement his lyrics, and fused together, they created his own style of eclectic acoustic, folk-pop music. While playing on the street in Old Town Alexandria, Katz was hired by the Fish Market to perform on weekends.
His first all original band INKwas short lived while the next incarnation saw some success with the song “What Would I Say?” featured on WHFS’s local licks. After INK disbanded Katz maintained his solo career playing local bars in Arlington, Alexandria, and Washington, DC.
Katz continues to write songs and can be heard performing around the DC area. A music video for “Free Your Mind” is now complete.
