Artist description
Some bands play for listeners. Others play for dancers. So it's always nice to find a band that plays for both. One such act is "The J D Kelly Revue". The blues revival has resulted in an explosion of cookie cutter bands churning out covers, like "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "Mustang Sally" but the "J D Kelly Revue" stays ahead of the pack by performing exceptional originals and reaching back for lost classics of the jump blues and R&B sound that ruled the 50's and early 60's. The four members of "The J D Kelly Revue" are often called musicians' musicians. Drummer Ken Hoffman is one of those artists who, in addition to strong and powerful studio sessions, is at his best playing in front of a live audience. Guitarist Dan Merwin is an all around exceptional player with incredible control and an extensive resume. Bassist Hubert "Blues" Lawhorn is a perennial veteran holding down the bottom and gaining notoriety as one of the areas most solid traditional performers. The icing on the cake comes from front man J D Kelly, perhaps the most in demand blues trombonist in the Colorado area. Kelly sits in with many local and national bands when he's not working with his newly formed Revue. His songs 'Dynamite' and 'Lost in the Shuffle' have been recorded and covered by several bands and have been well received during airplay on regional radio stations. The musicianship and song writing is as good as you will get either side of the Rocky Mountains. So, if you are just going out for the evening or to a festival this year make sure you watch for "The J D Kelly Revue". Get yourself to the show and just sit back, listen and most importantly watch as "The J D Kelly Revue" takes blues fans on a ride there not soon to forget. |

Press Reviews
-----------------------------The J D Kelly Revue-------------------------------The Ironworks Brewery-Lakewood CO Saturday October 5th 2002 "The band, smoking, bluesy, under incredibly tight, precise control, sets off with a couple of dance tunes done not too fast, not too slow, but so right that our feet began moving around the room. 'Madman from the Heartland' is a rockin Groove' that melds perfect jazz rhythms with classic blues ... vocalist J.D. Kelly demonstrates an excellent ability to masterfully handle all the notes with his mesmerizing blues fun, and the rest of the band are impeccable. And that's the tone for the show; pounding traditional blues, or even rollicking untraditional R&B as on the Chuck Berry classic Linda Lu, perfectly set the mood. ‘Lost in the shuffle’ and the occasional rocker like ‘The Craw’, remind us of the band's true roots... "The thing is, while this band plays blues quite well, they also manage to strike a far more fun, traditional groove with numbers such as ‘Tequila’ and 'Mojo Workin'. To dance to traditional, blues, R&B, swing that is impeccably timed and performed is after all, truly a pleasure. The masterful super-ensemble, Dan Merwin, guitar and vocals, Hubert ‘Blues’ Lawhorn bass guitar and vocals, Ken Hoffman, drums and vocals and the incredible J.D. Kelly on vocals trombone, trumpet and crowd pleasing antics is proof that great bands can add up to even more than great music. - Reviewed by Allan Davidson, BluesShack [Best of 2002 bands list] |
