Artist description
American Popular's music is often described as an amalgam of pop/rock icons Mother Love Bone with the melodic sense of Linkin Park — a cross between Axl Rose and David Bowie on lead vocals. Their guitar sounds are reminiscent of System of a Down, Disturbed and Chevelle. Big guitars, bigger choruses, eerily cunning vocals and provocative lyrics that demand your attention drive this act. |

Artist History
American Popular was formed in the summer of 2000 in New York City, out of the explosive songwriting energy of singer Lawrence Santiago, 25, and drummer/producer Marc Jordan 29. Lawrence and Marc met at New York University in the dorm where they shared drum licks and a penchant for watching the neighbor in the window across the street perform her daily striptease. When asked how their name was derived Lawrence explains, "Well there's an element of irony to it because while we are not a "pop" band — we are a product of American pop culture. It seems being American is a popularity contest. In our culture, you don’t have to know anything so long as everybody knows you. Then you're successful, right? But with a heavy price tag attached — consumerism and glamour with seldom regard for anything else. And everybody wants that, to be American popular? We poke fun at that notion while we celebrate it too (see title track, Sold Out)! We’re the good and bad aspects of this dichotomy, we’re the mirror image as much as anyone is because it's our culture — American pop culture and American popular music."
While we sometimes have difficulty understanding what Lawrence is saying, American Popular's music is often described as an amalgam of pop/rock icons Mother Love Bone with the melodic sense of Linkin Park — a cross between Axl Rose and David Bowie on lead vocals. Their guitar sounds are reminiscent of System of a Down, Disturbed and Chevelle. Big guitars, bigger choruses, eerily cunning vocals and provocative lyrics that demand your attention drive this act.
Lawrence, an American-born Puerto Rican, describes his earliest musical influences, "When I was little, a day didn't go by when I wasn't riding in my mom's 1979 Cadillac listening to John Lennon, Elvis, or Tito Puente." He also loves Sunny Day Real Estate, Filter, and KORN. Marc Jordan listened to The Cult, Motley Crue, The Cure and Duran Duran. Now he listens to the Deftones. His past projects include recording and performing with superstar Milla Jovovich, where he co-produced with Daniel Lanois. Bassist Kevin Roberts is from a desolate yet cheerful little village in northern Zaire, where he listened to the hot sounds of Jazz. He also loves Metallica. After playing with Elysian Fields he decided he'd get a tattoo and rock out American style. Guitar player Pat Yongkittikul has produced and performed with many successful pop and rock stars from his native Thailand, including his own new metal band, the Barbies (Warner Music Thailand).
