The Council - Review - The Arthouse - 26th June 2002
By Charlie-D
Arising from the twisted sinews of emptyquarter's decaying corpse, The Council is like a hard-nosed noir detective, sniffing out acrid cigar-and-whisky-fuelled riffs and down and dirty low-rent beats, with a penchant for corrupted vengeance.
The incognito miscreants, Susan Sandwich and Gladys Placenta (their given names on their press bio) make one hell of a racket for a two-piece, comprising of guitar and drums, with Susan on lead vocals, with Galdys backing.
The music is a comparative mugshot of different sounds, ranging from introspective guitar picking melodies to full-powered nocturnal crunching riffs. The volume and grit generated from this two piece is something truly awesome to behold. Imagine giant Soundgarden-meets-Sabbath drop-D riffing and sliding, through to Spencer P Jones-meets-The Jesus Lizard phrases and smirking with smatterings of Skeptics-experimentation to boot. Add to that a drummer with Helmet-esque sensibilities and primeval jazz-murmurings, and you have a damned hard act to follow.
Although The Council is new to the Melbourne scene, both Susan and Gladys found infamy with their former outfit, emptyquarter, and have been quick to make an impression in regular outings at the Town Hall Hotel.
For those you are yet to catch their show live, The Council have an EP due out in July called - "Nice Guys Get Hit By Cars Too" and they are scoring a soundtrack for the sci-fi Indie Film, "Creative Violence".
