Artist History
There's a Cinderella story brewing in the heart of New York City and the lead character is a seemingly predestined underdog named JJ. Born and raised in Colorado, JJ started her singing career at age 5 when her parents enrolled her at the Colorado Academy of the Arts, where she studied song, dance, and performance for 10 years. After graduating from High School, JJ immediately moved to New York City, where she began writing recording and performing.
Stricken with Type 1 Diabetes at age eight, leaving home at age 17 and recently losing her dad at the hands of a reckless driver on drugs, JJ is no stranger to beating the odds. Her singing and songwriting career is no exception. JJ started her career in New York City by signing several shoddy independent record deals, all of which flopped. However, nothing could stop JJ's relentless effort to realize her life-long dream. Her regimen included tireless hours working various day jobs while simultaneously "paying dues" via reference vocals, background vocal and writing sessions for everyone and anyone who asked. Despite the various producers and promoters who took interest in her talent (and JJ's own valiant effort to make anything work), she eventually determined that she had to take matters into her own hands if she was ever going to "succeed". With a new perspective, JJ set out on a spree of auditions, one of which landed her in the presence of industry heavy hitters FULL FORCE (credits ranging from James Brown to the Backstreet Boys and N'sync). After a brief display of her singing and writing capabilities, JJ was called back and began to work with Full Force immediately.
Since then, JJ has exploded onto the scene, landing respectable song placements with: "Blaque", "Melinda" (up and coming act on J Records), "3LW", Nick Cannon (up and coming act on Jive Records), "Namie" (Platinum artist from Japan) and has collaborated with songwriting legend Carole King. Most recently, JJ joined the SESAC family, penned a new production contract with fellow SESAC producer/writer, Nick Fury (credits: Lil' Kim, Fat Joe, Eden's Crush) and is also collaborating with SESAC producer/writer Donnie Scantz (Aaliyah, Tony Braxton) amongst others.
JJ is also working on her solo project, which contains a slate of her signature vocals, musical concepts and arrangements. Her focus however, remains mostly on penning and singing songs that contain positive material and messages. One of her powerful songs, entitled "Smokin' Blunts" takes its listener on a roller coaster ride through the events that led up to her dad's death. The song is scheduled to be released as a single on mp3.com in January and can be streamed at her website: mp3.com/J_J. All of JJ's proceeds will be donated to the D.A.R.E. program.
Beyond JJ's musical abilities lies a real girl with a real life. JJ is an active member of her church, continues to work her 9-5 everyday while simultaneously managing her health and still makes time for the important things: friends and family. You might not ever see her on TV but in her words, "If people feel me instead of see me, then mission accomplished."
