    Artist History
Cover Girl brings fusion of spoken word, hip hop and rock to a new level. Her work is at once innovative, fresh and elegant. Don Campbell, one of the fathers of Old Skool hip hop dance, named her "Cover Girl" because of her unique and feminine song and dance style. Her love of many kinds of music, from hip hop, rap, house and rock to old show tunes, world and classical contributes to the 'flava' of her work. Cover Girl lives her songs; their drama, observations and humor. 'I Wanna Be Rich' came after eyeing a dazzling little hat at Bergdorf's. 'Hip Hop Junkie' and "Hello" emanated from her passion for Hip Hop music and dance. 'Bye Bye Baby' is yet another milestone in her evolution as is 'Parisian Girl'. Influences include but are not limited to Eartha Kitt; Dr. Seuss; Notorious B.I.G.; the history and culture of the spoken word; Billie Holiday; Parliament; Jimi Hendrix; Cole Porter; Djembe drumming and East Indian philosophy. Cover Girl has sung and danced in fashion shows for SWAY, and has modeled for fashion and art photographers in New York City. (c) 2003, Psi CHIC Music, USA. All rights reserved.

    Press Reviews
"songs" by COVER GIRL, (as yet) Unsigned. I review this EP after having known this exquisitely strong, talented and dedicated lady as an acquaintance in high school... there was never a thought that our lives would re-intersect, much less with the common passions that they have. It has been such an easy thing to have immersed myself in dance music culture for more than twenty years, and pure joy to have been exposed to club life and all its nuances since before Saturday Night Fever -- I feel SO blessed to have been a part of it... and most importantly, that I can still rock a room with all sounds (from, YES, Sinatra to Aphrodite). In knowing that this quartet of songs only scratches the surface of Cover Girl's creativity, it's been a while since I've been so excited about an emerging talent. In also knowing what kind of bravery it takes to offer your musical (and personal) soul for public evaluation and scrutiny to such fickle masses on a forum so widely available as the internet, the respect I have for her knows no bounds. That said, let's get to these ultra-personal grooves. With the first cut, "Wherever You Go," we find CG (aka Psi CHIC) mixing her expository lyrics over a house mix. Her continued spiritual and musical growth could never be properly described here - you just KNOW. Vocoded and echoed vocals abound as the well-timed combination of spoken and sung lyrics espouse her knowledge that souls are entwined regardless of the physical location of the bodies in which they are housed. Her belief that relationships are SO much more than physical (although I KNOW that she believes that aspect is at least equally important - we all need to be held and caressed) comes across clearly while the musical composition continually drives the cut on. It's short, to me who's used to extended versions from hell, but it serves its purpose quite well. The second cut, "Hip Hop Junkie," is a rock/rap fusion in the "Walk This Way" vein but with her sophistication and experience coming to bear from the intro, which she asked me if I thought she should shorten (no freakin' way), through the hard kickin' first chorus. The uniqueness of expression may turn some young listeners off (open your minds, snappaheads, and your asses will follow) but, with it's retro-funk composition, the piece plows through her two passions (rap and dance) with no holds barred. In "I Wanna Be Rich," Cover gives us her interpretation of the "Material Girl" attitude with a Saks Fifth Avenue altitude. The groove's lightly Latinesque, carnival-like atmosphere nicely accents her sultry vocals - makes me wonder what pleasures could await the lucky guys that assist her elevation to such financial heights. The fact of the matter is that all of us would love to not have to worry about daily dollars (see "rich from the inside out," from the song's lyrics). "Oh Yeah" brings us back to the rock-dance fusion of "Hip Hop Junkie" but with a more personal lyrical construction. While HHJ was more dance oriented, this is at the same time more musically and personally full. Cover Girl's continual inclination to allow us to see parts of her that most of us try so hard to hide shows a courage not often apparent in any music that's even lightly dance oriented. Bra-freakin-vo! You Go Gurl! It would be a shrewd heavyweight producer, one that could get/feel Cover Girl's spiritual wavelength, who takes notice and helps nurture these songs (and the many more that I know are in loving incubation) to their deserved fruition.
