Artist History
Sunward was first conceived by vocalist/ violinist / guitarist Doug Kershaw (formerly of Tabula Rasa, Blender) and keyboardist/guitarist Greg Price (Deathray Davies, Big Twin EVO) in 2001. Both musicians hail from bands that have toured on national and regional club circuits and heard their CDs spun on college and commercial radio across the country. By early 2002, the lineup for the new group was completed after recruiting bassist David Perry and drummer Matt Blakely. Merging melodic song craft with psychedelically infused sound, Sunward moves in a fresh musical direction that is somewhere between indie-pop and space rock. While their music is steeped in lush, heady audioscapes created by atmospheric violin, guitar and synthesizers, Sunward never abandons the most recognizable element of a rock song, the melody. Drawing influence from such contemporaries as Grandaddy, Sparklehorse, The Flaming Lips and the traditions of Pink Floyd, Bowie and The Beatles, the resulting style is a quirky retro-pop that is both cerebral and accessible. Sunward recently recorded the song “Astronaut” to be included on the HandHeldSet Compilation CD featuring various other local Dallas bands and is currently playing out in venues across Texas.
