    Artist History
My love of dance music began when listening to the ITV’s chart show, and Herbie Hancock’s Rock it was playing “ it was the video that caught my attention first, and then the strange electronic drum pulse that just kept on coming. After many years of exploring the TV and my dads music collection ( The Beatles, Fleetwood mac tamla mowtown). I was always listening out for something new, so when one of my friends at primary school said I had to give this hip Hop tape a listen I was curious. I was ten years of age, and I remember their was three of us at one of my friend’s house, we all sat round this tape player sniggering, saying he said fuck and bitch thinking this is so cool” I also remember the moment my dad caught me, I was sitting in front of my Hifi with the head phones on soaking up the beatz, when my dad walks in and asks me what im listening to, you know how it is, your in the wrong and automatically the words nothing spill out. Well as you no nothing to a parent means trouble, so he whips the of headphones takes a listen, then started to scream and shout at me, then tells me Im not listening to this again, and burns the tape, on a bond fire. My next adventure towards the world of dance music was though one of my dads friends a young eighteen year old raver. I would hear dance on the TV and think this music is great, but it was Alison my dads friend (say no more) who would educate me with the more underground vibe with tapes she played me, recorded from the Eclipse and a unknown radio station called Kiss Fm situated in London. I became more interested and asked if copies of this music could be made, I remember I had these three tapes sasha the eclipse Stu allen kiss Fm, and Carl cox for about a year or two. What intrigued me more was the way it just went on and on seamlessly, I new a Dj played records but I didn’t no how, And that’s when I knew I wanted to Dj, I just thought it was all so magical. It would be six years before I was able to purchase a set of decks, but through that time music tapes were bought and borrowed and shop keepers annoyed. Living in Coventry Bang – in – Tunes was the place to go to listen to the up and coming new music, I just used to go in there and buy tapes Grooverider Fabio, and pick up the latest Flyers. I did at one time have my entire room devoted to rave flyers, as the art work at the time was considered futuristic and embodied the computerised era to which it came from. After their being years of hardcore domination a new sound in the rave scene was emerging, jungle or jungle techno emerged. Djs from the likes of ratty& tango jumping jack frost, Doc scott, Grooverider & Fabio all championed this sound. After this phase of dance music the progression of jungle took a major hold. I remember the first time hearing this new form of modern dance it didn’t sound like anything id heard before, the beats were so erratic and the bass so subsonic it was a major technological break through, I just wanted more and more of it. By around 94/95 my direction and style were now starting to take shape, what can I say LTJ, Fabio, Grooverider, doc scott, peshay, randall, jackfrost, all these guys just had major impact, they were jungle/drum & bass to me. They played the most futuristic form of the music a combination of machine precision timing with added musical textures. After years of listening to these djs, I grew ever more impatient, as I my dream was looking far from made. Frustration is all that sums up that period in my life, being poor and hoping for equipment of that expense is hard, it almost seems impossible. Like all things in life determination is the key factor in most ventures. When I left school I didn’t have a great no amount of qualifications, I knew I had to get a job to buy the equipment so I took on a block paving job for six months. While working, a friend of mine mentioned he was selling a set of belt driven soundlabs and so I bought them the of him for the sum of a 110. This then lead me onto the next phase of a djs life finding a personnel style and becoming a vinyl junkie. Every week I was paid I would go to Bang – in- tunes, spin a disc and level my wages on records, then I would go home and just sit in my loft all weekend with my mates and try and work out how mixing was done! I quickly picked up that adjusting the pitch control was all about timing in much the same way music is played by musicians. I was quickly making tapes and passing them to my friends for critical judgement, this helped me immensely even when the feedback wasn’t great, but it taught me how to take criticism. After numerous changes of turntable and failed promises of gigs I knew djing wasn’t the only aspect of music I could explore. I remember a girl I was going out with at the time; who now owns AS10 records in Coventry, over heard me criticise a record I was playing and said she thought I should have ago at making music. So I went along to tile hill college and asked about doing the ND in pop music, I was turned down so went on to attend a computer course at the butts college and while I was their, I was told by my tutor that a music course was being set-up towards the end of the year. So I signed up to that instead, but I only managed to complete a year because the DSS forced me to take job or loose benefits, I desperately wanted to continue and had remembered about the course just up the road at tile hill college. But with no musical attributes I came up against prejudice from the interviewing course leader , I was gutted, and I think he could see this, anyhow I was let on the ND which pleased me no end. I haven’t looked back since and doing these musical production courses has taken me to a new level of understanding. I have meet many people on the ND one of whom inspired me to send my music away, Steve ward (Rascal) out of Rascal and klone had been signed to moving shadow, It made me think dreams aren’t impossible I can do this. Continuing Education and doing a HND has made me even more aware of production standards in recording and making music, And this has inspired me through learning to send my music to record labels.
