Dap-C! Does the name ring a bell? No? Then you need to get that fucking Gareth Gates album out of your hi-fi, throw it as far as your puny little arm will allow you to then go get yourself a life. Because, to put it simply, if you don’t know Dap-C you don’t know music!
Born in Newcastle Upon Tyne – yes, where the beer is made – Dap-C or Craig Dalziel, as the birth certificate reads, was looking for inspiration musically from the age of eleven. He found it in the music of NWA, Ice-T, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and Rakim, Dalziel realised that at the heart of all the music he liked was someone talking about the hard knocks in life. And coming from a white-collar only child family in the more affluent area of Wallsend, Dalziel realised that if his music was to have the heart of the underside of life, he would have to go out and find that underside.
And that he did. By the age of 15, Dalziel had adopted the moniker of Dap-C, been expelled from school twice… actually, let’s tell the truth – expelled from two SEPARATE schools, been in trouble with the police more times than Al Capone was with Elliott Ness, and had written two albums worth of material as a result.
After setting the club scene firmly ablaze in his hometown, Dalziel started to put down his first album in January 2002, subsequently building a strong rapport and an extremely productive working relationship with producers Dom-P and DC Joseph, along with fellow rappers MC BC and Khaos.
And, after a brief six month stay courtesy of Her Majesty Prison Services and a free electronic tag around his ankle courtesy of Her Majesty’s Home Office, Dalziel was back in April 2003 with not only a new album, entitled Character Building (released 07/07/03), but an underground mix tape called 2003 – Year of the Dap-C. His official website, www.dap-c.com is up and running and creating what critics are calling a “phenomenal underground buzz”
And who says incarceration can’t be productive? Rumour has it Jill Dando’s murderer has mastered the art of knitting sweaters.
So now you know, I’m going to ask you one more time. Dap-C! Does the name ring a fucking bell?
