From The Ghettos of Southern California, originates the band TAZUMAL (one meaning of the Anahuac word, originally pronounced "tashumal", it was a place of sacrifice). I'm the lead singer, bassist, writer, composer, creator ------Atonal Mictlan. A native of "El Salvador" (Cuxcatlan). I moved to the United States 16 Years ago. With an artistic talent to draw, I tried to get into the comic book industry. Not getting there, eventually I tried my other passion. Playing music with a few lessons from my dad, I started playing bass and then the guitar. It got to the point of starting my own band, not ever finding members that would stick with it. After years of searching, I finally decided to do it on my own. I got a job, bought the equipment and made my first demo. I wasn't very knowledgable about the four track, so the sound quality wasn't very good. A few months later I bumped into Juan Brujo from BRUJERIA and gave him a copy of it. About 8 months later I went full out on my second demo, everything done by me. I made 50 copies, passed them out, and gave one to Juan Brujo. Surprisingly enough, he liked it. By then I had already found a committed drummer. His name is Camazotz, a native of Mexico (Mexico-Tenochtitlan). Me and the guitarist went to a DESTRUCCION show with the intent of finding more members for the band to fill in the gaps. Camazotz was the first musician we talked to and the first to take a demo. Out of the five demos we gave out that night, he was the only one serious enough to call back. We discovered that he had been playing for a bit over ten years. He was exactly the type of drummer we were looking for. He goes to college and takes music lessons, including the piano. He had played with other groups before, but like me, he couldn't find a group that would stick around long enough to start anything. His father is also an excellent drummer with many years of experience. The drum set that Camazotz uses actually belonged to his father, and he claims to be the only real drummer in his music class. The guitarist Necali Ehecatl is also a native of "El salvador" (Cuxcatlan). He is a Black-Belt Tae Kwon Do Instructor. I have known him since we were both very young. Our fathers both played in the same band, his father was the drummer and mine was the bassist. We had been playing together for years off and on. He has been playing guitar for about as long as I have. We both grew up in a war-torn country, and never knew what was really happening. Our parents didn't know much about it either. I eventually found my true roots and learned my culture and history. The war in "El Salvador" (Cuxcatlan) began long before American Imperialism, it was just a continuation of the Columbus Invasion that continues to make my people suffer. Our music points all of this out for you, so open your ears and look around you.

TAZUMAL A lead pipe to your ears would seem like a peck on the cheek after listening to these guys. The self-described indigenous death-metal band would make the folks at the late, great KNAC cringe, with their kill-all-prisoners lyrics condemning the lies and repression that have come out of Latin America for the past 500 years. A particular joy is to hear bassist Atonal Mictlán growl out Tazumal’s lyrics like a lawn mower cutting down the Weeds of Imperialism. www.geocities.com/tazumal_anahuac. TAZUMAL NOT DEAD YET (2-TRACK DEMO TAPE) Though Tazumal (which means "place of sacrifice" in Nahuatl) sing in Spanish, don’t call them a rock en español or Latino punk band. "We play indigenous death metal," says band spokesperson Xiuhcoatl Tonantzin. "We look at ourselves in the mirror and don’t see the European in us." The Santa-Ana-by-way-of El-Salvador-and-Mexico trio of Atonal Mictlán, Necali Ehecatl and Camazotl manifest this sentiment with Not Dead Yet, a demo that manages to synthesize more than 500 years of genocide and oppression into seven minutes of aural fury. Musically, they have the world-is-a-piece-of-shit sound of Mexican metal legends Luzbel. Lyrically, they attack the biggest enemies of indigenous Latin America, specifically the USA and the Catholic Church. "The Patriot" is your typical burn-the-American-flag ditty, which begins with Tazumal’s own version of the Pledge of Allegiance backed by a military drum beat and continues with a blasting of American imperialism via a barrage of hellish guitars and rhythms. "Religión Terrorista" is even faster and contains this soon-to-be-immortal line, aimed squarely at Catholicism: "They don’t respect my religion?/Well, they’re going to see their destruction, cabrones!" Both "The Patriot" and "Religión Terrorista" are sung in a style that the cover accurately describes as the "jaguar growls" of Mictlán and the "war screams" of Ehecatl. Hey, you’d be angry, too, if your culture were fucked in front of you every day. INFO: (714) 979-5699; www.geocities Thanks for doing an article about Tazumal, the most kick-ass death metal band here in Orange County (Gustavo Arellano’s "Too Loud to Ignore," April 19). I saw them at the Unitarian gig, and they gave one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. Finally there is a band whose music and lyrics are equally powerful and compelling. They’re just the kick in the ass that we OC Xicanos need to spring us into action. Keep hitting ’em hard, Tazumal! Rosalinda Ramirez
