Press Reviews
(from www.creativesynth.com)..."This is home to my insomnia fueled, cynicism laden, highly opinionated, frequently bitter, largely unsubstantiated, often changing, non proof read, passionately held, musically oriented beliefs." So begins the "Soapbox" section of the Sonus:Chaos website. If you've ever wanted to go inside the head of an underground musician, Sonus gives you the path and pathos right there. But that wouldn't matter if the music didn't back it up. Which it does. In spades. Sonus is the alter ego of Brad Derrick. According to Derrick the Sonus recordings allow him to explore aural territory that doesn't fit into his other projects and this idea of musical travel fits very well with the albums' themes. Sonus:Chaos is dark. Very dark. In a previous column I quoted Brian Eno as saying the problem with New Age music was there was no evil it. Well, Substatement fixes that right quick. Not to say Substatement is New Age but it's clearly not a simple to pigeon hole genre of any type which is why it is so welcome to the adventurous listener. Scraping ethereal sound creeps out of your speakers only to be interrupted by percussion which sounds like someone or something is walking up behind you for no good purpose. The first track starts with voices whispering to each other. Or are they whispering to you? Either way once you start listening it's too late to turn back. This is soundtrack music for a long, bad, introspective trip with teeth. The journey is well worth the bite. One listen to track 06 (PSv 1.0) and you will never think about percussion in the same way. Based around the concept of the "Plate Spinning Engine", loops and samples are manipulated until they create a singular disturbing ride that will keep you off the edge of your seat the entire time. Screenlit is a bit tamer but just as polished and well put together. It consists of four tracks with a moving motif that flows through them from start to finish. The one thing that jumps to mind while listening to these albums is the sheer magnitude and attention to detail that was put into them. One spin and it's apparent that these are not watered down commercial products but rather artistic personal statements that hold up as they are transferred from the creator to the listener. A rare and sincere effort in this day and age of MCtechno and musical mergers. Hit up the Sonus web page for full installments of writings, free streaming audio of these records, and updates and links to Derrick's other projects and collaborations. |
