Artist History
With both parents being bluegrass musicians and avid music lovers, all of the records that Sarah listened to as a child from their record collection ended up influencing her playing, singing, and writing, with some of the styles including Celtic, Bluegrass, Folk, World, and Gospel. With Sarah's first instrument being piano, she released two albums of piano and vocals by age 17. At 18, she left her hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina for Seattle, Washington, where she spent time teaching herself guitar. Inspired by such players as Martin Carthy, John McLaughlin and Michael Hedges, Sarah found her own sound in open tunings and experimental phrasing. In the spring of 1998, Sarah returned to the southeast to Nashville, Tennessee where she continues to write and perform. Whether she is playing her "vocally driven" piano ballads or lush, organic songs accompanied by a full band, she manages to melt the styles that have shaped her music, into one unique, uncategorizable sound. |
