Artist description
Planet 12 is a rock band. Various sub-genres that may apply are: modern rock, indie pop, college rock, and/or soul-flavored post-rock yogurt. Our various musical backgrounds cause us to try and incorporate elements from other kinds of music that we like, from blues to industrial. When it's all mixed together, however, it comes out sounding like something that is uniquely Planet 12. |

Artist History
"The following tale is true, and by true, I mean false. In fact, it's all lies. But, they're entertaining lies, and in the end, isn't that the real truth? The answer is no."
---Leonard Nimoy.
Planet 12 was conceived in the small college town of Athens, Ohio, in the summer of 1999. Guitarist/songwriter Matt Toledo and lead vocalist/lyricist Jodi Toledo recruited three other musicians to form a new rock outfit, shortly after the demise of their first band, Fred's Front Wheel.
At the time playing a form of heavy rock with strong influences of blues, jam, fusion, and even math-rock, the band booked a substantial number of shows and built a reputation in Athens in a very short period of time. However, after only six months, the band split over musical differences. By early 2000, Matt and Jodi were left without a band once again. They realized that their VH-1 Behind the Music special was really going to suck if Planet 12's story ended right there.
Fortunately, during the previous months, they had befriended local Indie rock anti-heroes, Pasquali. In the Spring of 2000 Matt and Jodi joined forces with Pasquali bassist/guitarist Jeremy Foltz and began practicing with a new drummer, Shannyn "Felix" Alvis. The new line-up gelled instantly and they wrote an almost entirely new catalogue of songs, abandoning the jammy-pop ways of the first incarnation in favor of a heavier, more modern-rock style.
Shannyn and Jeremy are two of the hardest working musicians around, and consequently Planet 12 began playing what would become an endless barrage of shows in the Summer and Fall of 2000. In a short period of time, they established themselves as one of the premier rock bands in both Columbus and Athens, playing nearly every club and festival in the area.
Planet 12 has continued this onslaught right through 2001, including the release of their debut EP, Eclipsed. Along the way, they picked up their fifth member, ex-Pasquali axeman, Jarrod Whittington, and added backing vocalist Stephanie Alvis.
Despite their false-start, Planet 12 has grown up to become a very tightly-knit band with lofty aspirations and a rapidly-growing fan base.

Press Reviews
"…Planet 12 plays literate tunes that start out deceptively simple. Then they climb to an electric crescendo, swept along by lead singer Jodi Toledo's alternatingly powerful and subtle vocals. On "Bathtub" she belts out the tune with Joan Jettian bravado, while on the hypnotic "Filter" she adeptly pulls it back about a dozen notches."
- Terry Smith, The Athens News
"…this female fronted quartet turns an agreeably rockin' performance on
Eclipsed, a six-song EP that splits the difference betwixt Sleater-Kinney's indie stylings and Pat Benatar's "Hit me with your best shot" bravado."
- Rob Harvilla, The Other Paper (Columbus, OH)
"An intense, hard-edged energy drives this band, even in the most melodic of their songs. Though ostensibly not punk rock, the minor chords and tight drumming -- and an impassioned female singer -- might fool you."
