Artist History Originally born and raised in New Jersey, Tru Self now lives in Oakland, CA. He began producing hip hop music in 1990. My father was a jazz trumpet player and I also played trumpet and baritone horn from age 9 through high school. Musical knowledge is extensive and varied, including funk, rock & roll, R&B, pop, jazz.
