Artist History
Yimwu is a seven-piece band from Baltimore, MD. They play a sort of dark blues-indie-rock. Influences most recognizable in their music are Smashing Pumpkins, Tom
Waits, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Rasputina, Beck, and Neil Young to name a few. Members of Yimwu are/were part of such bands as In Clover (Theory 8 Records), Tantrum
of the Muse (Takehold/Quintana Records), and Full Circle. While the idea started sometime in 2000, the actual band didn't come together until the summer of 2002.
Since then they've recorded an independent EP titled "A Short Tale of Yimwu and His Burnt Ones". The CD was recorded the fall of 2002. One track (The Devil is a
Woman) from the EP was used as the soundtrack to a short film by Lance Rainier entitled Indianapolis. The film was about a man going crazy and it bombed at the
Regional Lesbian Film Festival. Overall the CD has been well received. Critics have embraced the recording, quoting, “Despite the ‘evil-circus’ sound (distorted vocals
and all) the songs still come off as well-written and heart-felt”, and “They’re bleak, depressing piano-driven songs with extremely spare arrangements…Jamie McLane
has a beautiful, understated voice, Sincere as all hell”.As of now Yimwu is getting ready to record their first full length. Yimwu has been playing shows in Maryland and
Virginia since mid-2002. One of the band’s friends was in the crowd at a Yimwu show and heard a well-put reaction in the stark silence that followed one of the scariest
instrumentals played in America: One guy goes, “What the hell was that?” and someone else on the other side answers, “That was amazing.” |
