Artist History
Eloes started in summer of 1999. For our first year, we were a duo; Sheif on guitar and vocals, Mike on drums. We met in park where Mike “worked”. He opened the “bunker” as we called it, where we spent that whole summer and fall drinking and smoking all night over. After a few days, Mike and Sheif got together for their first jam, at Mike’s place. Starting off with “Territorial Pissings” by Nirvana, the connection was immediate. Sheif had written a few songs, and they started playing them as a band. During the next year, a dozen guitarists and bassists were hired for a few days before being refused for lack of artistic intelligence or lack of implication in the band. They still had no name, going from joke names as Absynth or The Tony and Sunshine Band. They played their first gig in a small bar in Laval, asking for a friend’s guitar help for the occasion. That guy sucked and the show was failure, but the crowd went nuts god knows how. The name for the band came in the bunker, on Mike’s last day of work. Eloes is a mix of the plant Aloe, and Eloise, a name one of the girls hanging out with them used to give to her boyfriends’ swollen members! Right after a few laughs, a guitar and a bottle of wine were all it took for the band’s anthem “A whole Waste”.
Sheif and Mike dropped out of school in 2001, a few weeks before the end of their last year, having previously met one guy named Michael, who they discovered, was starting to play bass. They called him for jam, and the guy was learning at a really fast pace, so they kept playing. A few months later, the band got separated, the guys all having personnal matters to take care off. In the summer of 2002, they got back together to record their first demo at Air MS Studio in Montreal. The session gave the band a boost, and two months later, their first real gig as a band took place in a Montreal pub. A few new songs were written, a few more gigs, and still more to come. Their main influence has always been the Seattle scene from the early nineties, as well as good old stuff from the Beatles to Black Sabbath. |
