Press Reviews
With a remarkable variety of selections, Variable Frequency covers old school without forgetting the chill room which is alive and well in the track "The Call". Trippy snyth patterns, interesting vocal samples and just about everything covered in the genres is done expertly and with tasty unexpected turns and twists. I like.--Ed Drury
------------ Variable Frequency
(Ambient Dark-hop tone poetry)
When you have been doing reviews for a long time you start to appreciate things that are aesthetic extras. Variable Frequency who hails from Indiana, the home of "Ganga-Faya" and others of the new Dub school, has prepared for all mp3ers a series of 4 ambient pieces titled "The Call," an electronic tone poem that seems to follow some kind of enlightenment story.
Part 1: Mostly synth pads and mellow drumbeats hint at a somewhat dark psychological journey, this chapter is ended with the introduction of an acoustic guitar.
Part 2: Guitar sounds from "1" lead into more upbeat hip-hop loop over lush synth pads, 404-sounding lead/bass (in the style of "Massive Attack" and "Tricky") supply a vibrato tuning sound which leads back to the main theme with dark hip-hop beats. Laughing samples end the track.
Part 3: The somber guitar moves into a major-country/blues arpeggiation, the sample of an explosion morphs the piece into super-pleasing Latin conga and hand claps, sounds like slow-core flamenco (I could imagine dancers in some distopian future doing modern ballet to this), the track comes in and out alternating between Fx and beats.
Part 4: Latin conga's from "3" begin but much more up-tempo this time, moves deceptively into a major scale arpeggiation which finishes the track in a mellow sentimental way.
I have to give "VF" props for being so innovative on the subject matter of these pieces, pulling a series of "concept" songs off is not an easy thing to do, the sounds are pleasant and the idea is good, there is really nothing wrong with this stuff, but there really isn't too much that is ear-catching either (not that it isn't enjoyable). If I had a request of this artist I would ask him to try some collaborations to supply more melody to his tracks (perhaps a guest vocalist or MC,) This music works great for parties of the "Chill" variety, and was absolutely worth the time it took me to review this. -Hamatula
