BIOGRAPHY Name: Sean Butler Alias: SB a.k.a. The Northstar, a.k.a. The Lyrical Messiah Age: 29 Hometown: Chicago Style: Hip-Hop/Soul/Inspirational Hobbies: Reading, Writing, Drawing, Basketball and Boxing Favorite Rap Artists: Lauryn Hill, KRS One, Chuck D, Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli Background: From the oral tradition of the ancient griots (revered story tellers) of Africa emerges SB, a modern day griot with a message. With an uncompromising spiritual base, SB articulates his unique perspective on controversial issues while infusing them with universal appeal. Themes in his music include God, love, and family, topics that are rarely addressed in hip-hop today. It is his honest, heartfelt approach that allows his music- a blend of Hip-hop, R&B, jazz, soul,- to speak to and inspire people of every age, race, gender and religion. SB is more than an artist: it's a movement. In 1996, when Bushwick Bill saw SB's free style rap performance, he immediately pushed SB to record a demo, saying he had the "skills to make mill's." With the help of DJ IC Dre (producer for Twista), SB wrote and recorded his first demo that same year. Shortly afterwards, he began opening up for industry acts Soul 4 Real, Tracy Lee, A+, and Crucial Conflict. He also became a featured WGCI (107.5FM) Home Jam artist when his demo was passed on to the Bad Boyz (Mike Love and the Diz). In 2000, SB wrote and recorded a song that appeared in the movie track for 'Love Infinity.' He also wrote and recorded a voiceover for a television commercial for Freshgear clothing store. In 2001, SB passed a new song inspired by the events of 9-11 ("Living Life") on to the Diz, which he played on the air that night. He not only gave SB the opportunity to create promos for WGCI but also Hula, known for his production work on Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince's (Will Smith) smash hit, 'Summertime.' Shortly afterwards, SB achieved heavy rotation on WGCI with a promotional remix for Usher Raymond's, 'You Don't Have To Call.' A big club hit in Chicago, it climbed to number two on the WGCI 'Coke Top Nine at Nine' countdown (the only song with an unsigned artist to do so). Appearing on compilation CD's for both DJ IC Dre and the Diz, in June of 2002, SB was invited to New York to perform for A&R's and executives representing Def Jam, Interscope, ASCAP, and Sony. He is currently working on a full length LP and performing live at various venues.
