Artist description
Blue Rose Liar seduces the unsuspecting audience with the marriage of the ethereal and the frustrated. Amalgamating their latent punk and hardcore roots, Blue Rose Liar augments this history with an intense paranoia, otherwise lacking in each respective genre. The lyrics are haunting poetry, a fractured personal nostalgia translated into metaphoric universal conflict. Blue Rose Liar's music reflects the sentiment of agoraphobia and perhaps a schizophrenic mood, ranging from melancholy melodic to antagonistic rage to bittersweet interpretations of pop. Collectively, Blue Rose Liar acts as an aural Rorschach test, evoking in its listener an eclectic emotional mix from grief to compassion. |

Press Reviews
A short but sweaty three-song CD debut for a trad-hardcore local supergroup fronted by former Boiling Man mainstay (and onetime New Haven Advocate illustrator) Todd Rogers. The five-piece BRL's roster includes members of Brutally Familiar, Broken, T.S.S. and 3 Finger Demon, so you can quickly imagine the sound--a dark but quick, roiling wave of hardcore, metal and polished punk.
With a title like When Shadows Swallow Shadows, you might expect something bleak and dour. But there's something inexplicably joyous about lyrics like "There's a black Atlantis where I go to die, down at the bottom of my saline sea/Where I go to die when I try to die/Dreams sink like lead in the undertow/Alone together, fierce Atlantic grace/A siren singing songs and bringing nightmares" (from the kick-off track "Black Atlantis"). Especially when the words are delivered with such spit, spew, speed and abandon. If the rapid-fire side of the band doesn't appeal, then the sturdy, somber opening riffs will bring some heavy meditative pleasure. Straight-ahead rock fans shouldn't be disappointed either, with the shoutbacks and peppy chords of "With Interest." Blue Rose Liar stands out with sincerity and style, but it's also part of a proud tradition of hard, thoughtful, New Haven punk rock that stretches back to Jasta 14 or maybe Lost Generation.
