Artist History
Taken From www.tristanprettyman.com:
At age 20, San Diego's Tristan Prettyman is starting to put it all together. Although the young singer/ songwriter has only been playing guitar for five years, her sound shows signs of serious maturity. Raised in sun soaked Southern California, Tristan grew up surfing with her friends and drawing inspiration from the ocean in which she spends so much time. She started playing guitar and writing at 15 and by the age of 17 had an extensive repertoire of songs that she would play for friends eager to hear the smooth, sultry voice that she had hidden in the past. At 18 it became evident that Tristan had quite a talent. She started bringing her old nylon string guitar with her everywhere she went so she could accommodate any of her admirers' requests for songs. After going through several difficult relationships and experiencing a close friend's drug addiction, Tristan's songwriting became a way for her to deal with the often painful realities of growing up. Music became her best friend and she studied it with passion, spending hours getting lost in the songs of Ani Di Franco, Jeff Buckley, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, and countless others.
While playing a few songs at a friend's house one night, someone mentioned she should record one to be used in a surf film that was being made at a local production company. Tristan agreed and her first demo was born at Poor Specimen Productions with the use of only a mini disc player and a single microphone. One song, a spur of the moment improvisation later named "Anything At All", stood out from the performance and was used in the film called "Shelter", which went on to win Best Film at the X-Dance film festival. The song struck such a chord with the film's producers that they added it to the CD soundtrack to the film. The response since then has been overwhelming. Copies of the rough demo recordings have popped up everywhere and emails are coming in from fans excited to hear more about this young talent. Tristan's demo has been playing on 92.1 FM in San Diego and on Al Guerra's local radio show on Rock 105.3 FM. Lately, Tristan has been spending her free time playing live shows and adding polish to her songs in local recording studios to prepare for the eventual release of a full length album.

Press Reviews
"The first is a four song EP by Tristan Prettyman. This untitled 2002 release came to me too long ago and I've been spinning it ever since. With an intriguingly lovely cover and scant production details, this early effort is very promising, with emotive and witty lyrics delivered through Prettyman's multi-layered chorus of lovely vocals, which range from introspective, to sad, to hopeful ("Evaporated" is the hit)." -Carter Yarbrough, Goleta Valley Voice |
