Artist History
"It's nuclear!" That's all anyone knows about the Interociter, a grandiose machine featured in the 1955 sci-fi classic This Island Earth. Besides that, well, there is no besides that. It’s not that the machine doesn’t work, it just seemingly does no work. Conversely, for the Chicago-bred band The Interociter, this characterization could not be further from the truth, except the band occasionally does exhibit some nuclear tendencies. The band is a machine that works relentlessly. Its product is crowds of dancing fools, drunk on happy go lucky vibes, engulfed in The Interociter’s hyper hypnotic live show. The typical Interociter performance is first of all fun - a beguiling puree of jagged guitar licks, soul inflected bass rhythms, slick lyrics, and a realness that connects them with their audience.
With a sound combining elements of the Velvet Underground's crisp guitar jams, the Beta Band’s harmonious flair and the Flaming Lips’ lyrical whimsy, The Interociter knows how to ignite a crowd. Their oft-requested Chicago Football Anthem, Mike Singletary, is a perfect example of what makes The Interociter interlock - jocular prose, hip shaking inspired grooves, and the ability to move the crowd. All these elements give The Interociter a distinct sound that keeps their fans coming back and their mailing list growing. Not content with the confines of the stage, the band’s song - Noble Gas – off of their first EP is the subject of an upcoming music video produced by Just Add Water Productions, due for release soon.
The story of the band’s formation begins with a well-known narrative - the childhood friend story. Lead vocalist and guitarist Tom Zimmerman and drummer Matt LeCrone are your protagonists. They grew up in Oak Park, just a Blue Line stop west of Chicago, during a budding rock era that first introduced Chicago band The Smashing Pumpkins to the rest of the world. The local scene shaped them. Tom strummed his first chord and Matt hit his first high hat in 1994. They were hooked. Inspired by popular bands like The Beatles, The Gratetful Dead, Beck, and Ween, they found two other local musicians and formed their first band, Fritz’s Basement. Their first musical experiment ended in 1996 when the childhood buddies split to attend their respective colleges.
Tom headed to Northwestern University and Matt to Southern Illinois. Neither took much time off from the music scene. Within a year Tom was playing with college favorite The John Barry Suggestion and quickly formed a close creative relationship with Suggestion bassist Sam Grossman, previously of Chapel Hill, NC combo Free Money. About the same time, six hours away, Matt pounded the rhythms for Carbondale rock/funk band Stoker Street Band. After five years of doing their own thing, the year 2001 presented an opportunity for Tom and Matt to unite once again after the breakups of The John Barry Suggestion and Stoker Street Band. This time Grossman joined them. Enter The Interociter. Each member’s previous experience prepared The Interociter to quickly metamorphose into a well-oiled machine.
As their fan-base grows, The Interociter continues to play to packed houses around Chicago. They have made regular appearances at a variety of venues, including Empty Bottle, Gunther Murphy’s, Beat Kitchen, Nevin’s Live, Prodigal Son, and Phyllis’ Musical Inn. The Interociter has played the house party scene as well, with spectacular results: spontaneous 3+ hour sets, sweat filled rooms bursting at the seams, and a non-stop floor shaking vibe. The Interociter's first full length features many of their live performance favorites including Sedentary Life, Three Quarters, and Feelin’ So Lo. The band plans to continue playing many of their regular local venues throughout the summer of 2002 and are currently planning their first multi-state tour next spring. The band will be working (or ‘not working’ as they like to say) venues throughout Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Iowa. New fans continue to flock to shows because of what The Interociter is - part pop, part posies, with a bedrock of the good rock, the stuff that comes with rolls. The end result is a machine firing on all cylinders and an effective recipe for rock success. Simply put, it's nuclear.

Press Reviews
Jim DeRogatis - Chicago Sun Times, 9/27/02
"Named for a mysterious machine in the B-movie classic 'This Island Earth,' this Oak Park (IL) trio infuses the generic emo-punk sound with a touch of psychedelia and a flair for solid hooks to arrive someplace fairly unique". |
