Artist description
9 & ZEN
The elements: Funk, Hip hop, Latin, Reggae, Rock
The result: WORLD FUSION
9 & Zen is an eclectic musical duo based in Montana (of all places!) consisting of Gregory Bruce Campbell (Warrior 9-string fretted and fretless basses) and Jeremy Slead (Zendrum and MIDI). Having known each other since childhood, and having played music together since each first picked up his instrument, there is no reason to wonder why these two innovators would choose a duo as the vehicle to express their musicality. The music is a melting pot of styles: Funk and metal, Latin and jazz, fusion and hip-hop...it defies categorization and boundaries alike. A blend of seemingly incompatible genres mixed with a propensity for off-the-cuff improv, results in something completely new, surprising listeners and its creators alike, with no two performances ever being the same. The mission of 9 & Zen is to walk the fine line between experimentation and noise. The uniqueness of the instrumentation lends itself well to cutting-edge sounds, and these sounds are manipulated into compositions that pay homage to all kinds of music; the end result being something that the duo enjoys playing, and that listeners (hopefully!) enjoy hearing. Modern technologies such as MIDI, sampling, effects, and looping allow 9 & Zen to completely explore the realms of music...whether it be funky "guitar" chords from the 9-string bass, a reggae jam on steel drums from the Zendrum, or a soundscape of interwoven rhythms created by loops. It is this unique combination of tools that gives 9 & Zen its sound: sometimes melodic, sometimes aggressive, but always flying by the seat of their pants... |
