Winter Curse -Blessed Be The Damned- Demo
DIY - 2003
Winter Curse is a brand new band from the St-Hyacinthe area, formed in the winter of 2002. I'm guessing that's where they got their name from. This 2 song demo came out in August 2003 in the form of a CD-R with home recording, pretty clean quality might I add.
The first song "Prayer For A Thornless Rose" is just around 4 minutes in length. There is a lot of metal on hands, but the home recording quality, good as it may be, doesn't give a clear enough idea of what the guitars are doing, so it comes off as a lot of arranged noise in the end. Overall this song reminds me of Buried Inside a lot, musically at least. Lyrically, I'm guessing the text refers to the vainglory of religious believers. Suiting, but not exactly new.
The second song clocks in at just a little under 8 minutes. This one reminds me more of older Zao, but it suffers from the same problem as the first one, you can't always tell what the guitars are doing. This track has a couple of long instrumental parts which explains the length of the song, but it works out pretty well.
The demo's packaging is more than adequate, considering so many bands' demos are just boring to look at these days. Pretty artistic in a very gothic way.
Winter Curse consists of some pretty down-to-earth guys who are down with the scene, they're not in it just for their own agenda. So they get my vote in this department. I expect their next release to be a lot tighter however if they wish to make a few waves crash at the right doors. You can download both songs off their website so check them out.

Assuming "Blessed be the Damned" is the intro song. That is one sick intro, really chilling and set the mood. I don't go for metalcore as much I used to. However, "Prayer for a Thornless Rose" and "Emoragy"(which has a cool bass intro) are certainly above average. Touches like the two I mentioned set it apart from being lost in the sea of similar bands
