Artist History
Sprung from the depths of East San Diego County comes Slewfoot, a four piece new-school alternative metal project based out of El Cajon. Originally formed in November of 2000, the influences of this band range from the overwhelming intensity of System of a Down to the melancholy Pink Floyd - each member bears their own unique musical background. This combination breeds a very high-energy brand of rock, which is reflected in a dynamic stage show.
Slewfoot features Jay Edwards on lead vocals and keyboards, Jason Rice on guitars, Aaron Spaulding on bass and Chris Pollock as the self-proclaimed "percussional scientist". Jay is the newcomer, having joined Slewfoot in late July 2003. Slewfoot had a pair of singers prior to Jay, both departing on mutual creative differences in musical direction. With their original singer, Slewfoot won a Battle of the Bands in January 2002 at The Epicentre sponsored by Sugarlight Productions – all told; the night featured over 120 Slewfoot fans in attendance. Shortly thereafter the original singer left, leaving Slewfoot without a front man for almost nine months. An exhaustive search yielded a highly capable but stylistically different vocalist. These differences proved insurmountable, and the time soon came to once again search for a new vocalist. Returning to a reliable source, Aaron discovered Jays' ad in the San Diego Reader. He was quickly accepted into the band after exhibiting impressive vocal talent, dedication to writing, and overall enthusiasm for the project. Slewfoot now finds themselves finally complete, and prepared to make a huge impact on the local music scene.
For musical inspiration and technique, Jay has drawn upon his prior experiences dating back to the age of 11 when singing in a church choir, as well as the front man for such bands as True Life and Catchpenny. His passion for music, thought-provoking lyrics and overall enthusiasm undoubtedly transfer into an energetic and vivacious performance. His primary influences are easily recognizable, with silky smooth harmonies like those of Brandon Boyd (Incubus), contrasted by ferocious, bone-chilling screams comparable to Daryl Palumbo of glass JAw. Jason has had active band experience since the age of 12, playing alongside well-known local hardcore acts such as Psychotic Waltz and Teabag. He has frequented several local death metal bands since beginning his musical career. His catchy chorus riffs and heavy picking style sits at the heart of Slewfoot's unique sound. Aaron has been playing bass for over three years, and Slewfoot is his first band. His thumping, occasionally funky bass lines are the driving force behind the tight rhythm section. Chris has an extensive punk drumming background, and has been playing since high school. His previous band experience includes Half Decent, among others. He lists Frank Zappa and Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band as major influences. Chris and Aaron also share a roots-reggae based side project known as The Otherins.
Slewfoot has shared the stage with some well known San Diego bands, including dramabomb, Stolen, Turam, Amherst and Decidedly So…. They’ve played in numerous venues across San Diego County and even into Nevada and Arizona. This band is not to be missed live…no one yet has left unimpressed.
