    Artist History
FYVM FYVM is the union of vocalist/flutist Lory Lacy and guitarist Joe Zuptich. The pair have joined forces in a venture combining their diverse influences to create a powerful, honest approach to real rock. Lory Lacy is a unique flutist, whose training in classical and jazz has led her to explore the boundaries of her instrument beyond the acoustic realm. Using technology to her advantage, yet adhering to a stringent belief that music must retain the soul of its master, she has designed a secret formula of traditional guitar effects for her flute, resulting in a unique blaze of sound and fury. Her colorful vocal style ranges from a soft, sultry pathos to a screaming, full-voiced high end, revealing the influences of Billie Holiday and Robert Plant. Lacy’s previous projects include a studio release called “Alien Water Sky” that Jim Ladd plays frequently on his legendary show, Headsets, on Los Angeles radio station 95.5, KLOS. Her jazz disc, As the Crow Flies, has aired on jazz stations around the country, including 88.1, KLON. Her work as a studio musician has appeared on BET, the Disney Channel, and numerous independent releases from L.A.’s underground hip-hop and trip-hop scenes. Her jazz quartet was also featured live on CNBC’s “Power Lunch”. Joe Zuptich, Lory Lacy's songwriting partner, immigrated to Los Angeles in 1998. Born in the Midwest, he was a sound engineer at The Blue Note in Columbia, MO, a live music venue frequented by many national acts. Armed with his years of experience in live sound reinforcement, Joe designed a special audio rig for Lory Lacy allowing her to utilize her cache of effects live. Zuptich’s approach is the polar opposite of Lacy’s conservatory training. With only a passing knowledge of music theory and having been raised on classic rock, Zuptich cut his teeth playing in blue jams with mentor Bugsy Maugh of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Besides his blues education through high school and playing in a few college party bands, his musical development consisted mostly of creating basement tapes and playing for self-enjoyment. Only at Lacy’s insistence did he break his isolation and brave the L.A. music scene.

    Press Reviews
Review by: Derrick Marr/Great White Noise http://www.greatwhitenoise.ca Plain And Sinful by FYVM Elle Elle Productions, 2002 Based out of L.A., this duo combine a wrenching, soulful style with a contemporary, up to date feel and add a unique and pleasant sound to the music scene. This certainly is not your usual pop/rock disc, so if that is what you are after, go elsewhere. If, however, you want to hear some heartfelt belting vocals backed only by a guitar and the occasional flute and/or keyboard, jump at Plain And Sinful and you will probably wearing the CD out playing it. Lory Lacy is a classical and jazz trained flutist. Combine this with an obviously adventuresome musical personality and it is easy to see why she has pushed the boundaries of her instrument beyond the traditional, acoustic realm. Guitarist Joe Zuptich is, in a musically trained sense, the complete opposite of Lacy’s. Never trained in musical theory, and raised on classic rock, Joe paid his dues while playing with blues musician Bugsy Maugh of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. With the release of Plain And Sinful, FYVM showcases two artists at the opposite ends of the training spectrum that have merged into a single entity to produce some complex and haunting music that will stay with you after the disc has eventually been taken from the player. The vocals rise and fall through the scales, sometimes barely a whisper, and at other times belted out with enough volume to make your speakers shake. The guitars almost always take a backstage to the vocals, but they are no less impressive. Never trying to force them to your attention, the playing seeps into you and it is only afterwards with a chance to reflect do you realize exactly how good they are. This is the perfect example of a guitarist who is comfortable and confident in his playing. The fourth song on Plain And Sinful, Blue, is, to my untrained ears, the perfect piece. Tough, yet beautiful vocals. Excellent, yet unobtrusive guitar work and a soft moody flute all combine to make this an extremely enjoyable song. So for a taste of something a little different, and yet thoroughly enjoyable, make sure you check out FYVM. You will not be disappointed!
