Artist History
A Long Time Ago in A Basement Far, Far Away…
Three kids who barely knew how to play their instruments began jamming together on a regular basis. They were hell bent on playing ska music (the big, popular genre at the time) but lacked the skill to do so. Hence the odd name of the band, The Skatniks. What they ended up sounding like bore more resemblance to chaotic/sludge/powerviolence/noisecore than to ska. They later realized ska sucked and stopped caring.
Still, our heroes Jeremy, Will and Sacrey (the aliases of these young men) trudged on, and recorded a barely circulated demo of their four songs. These songs were a failed attempt at pop-punk rock by the trio. The vocals were off, as was the guitar (Will was doing the double chore of singing as well as playing the axe). The drum beats were also more like arena rock than punk; and Jeremy had no instrument at all, so he used Will’s junk-bass (which he had no clue how to play). Needless to say, the end product was not going to win any musical awards…
A few months later, Jeremy would finally get an electric guitar, and the skatniks became stronger than ever. The threesome became much tighter music-wise (but still sucked quite badly). Lyrics were written, but rarely used. The search for a permanent bassist began…but to no avail.
A second tape was recorded on Jeremy's trusty Karaoke machine (which also served as the PA for the group). This tape was much more listenable than the first, but unfortunately did not win them any gigs or "cred" in the Portsmouth rock scene.
Regrettably, shortly after this time, Sacrey got involved with a girlfriend. His infatuation with this evil woman caused The Skatniks to go into a brief dormant period, where the only 'practices' were improvisational guitar sessions at Will's basement, sans Sacrey. This was a dark and unsure time for the group.
Due to the lack of productivity in The Skatniks, Will and Jeremy decided to start a new band. It was intended only as a side project, but blew up to overshadow The Skatniks whole career. This side project was entitled New and Improved, and despite the horrible name (not quite as bad as "the skatniks" though), this band grew up to become Portsmouth's pride and joy. The Skatniks seemed to disappear for a time, whilst Jeremy and Will focused on NAI; and Sacrey focused on his girl.
Sacrey broke up with the woman a few months later, thankfully, and the Skatniks were reborn. Jeremy, Will, and Sacrey experienced a drastic improvement in musical skill since the hiatus. They were beginning to put out music that resembled something a real band would make. They had their first and what was intended as LAST show at a house party sometime in June 2002, as Will would soon move away. Will moved away that summer, and The Skatniks dissolved.
The Skatniks would later reform in Fall of that year, with a new lineup. What does the future hold for this group? Well, they are looking to play more and more shows, and to eventually do some recording (that is not done on Jeremy's karaoke machine for once). I hope you enjoy their new sound…I know I do. |
